Update []:

Square Enix has heard your groans about the lack of updates on Kingdom Hearts 4, and it’s moved to rectify them by releasing new screenshots of the upcoming PS5 game.

The images, which have been deployed as a kind of collage on Instagram, show an updated Sora model, combat against the Heartless, and what appears to be a playable Mickey Mouse.

Check out the screenshots below:

“We’re currently working hard on Kingdom Hearts 4 and will continue pouring ourselves into the game’s development,” a statement reads. “We’re dedicated to making this an experience that lives up to your expectations!”

It continues: “We’ve seen how excited you are, and we are truly grateful from the bottom of our hearts. We are equally excited and can’t wait to share more about Kingdom Hearts 4 when the time is right. Until then, we appreciate your patience.”

The character models and environments look really nice, and it’s good to know progress is being made. It sounds like we may have to wait a little longer for a new trailer, however.

Original Story: It’s been over six years since Kingdom Hearts 3, and it doesn’t really feel like we’re any closer to Kingdom Hearts 4, the latest instalment in Square Enix’s unapologetically anime Disney mash-up.

And for those of you who were hoping GPS-based mobile Missing-Link would fill the gaping chasm in your heart, prepare to be consumed by all-encompassing darkness: the Japanese publisher has pulled the plug.

This is all part of a wider effort from the organisation to clean up its output and release bigger titles quicker. After working on this project for over three years, the company’s finally decided enough is enough.

“Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development,” a statement reads.

“The Kingdom Hearts series will continue. We are hard at work on Kingdom Hearts 4, and hope you’ll continue to support the series as you keep an eye out for further updates.”

There has, unfortunately, been no word on when Kingdom Hearts 4 will come out, but we’re not expecting it until at least 2027 at this point.
