Warner Bros is going through a period upheaval, and apparently that’s got Sony sniffing.

To be honest, website SEScoops may not be the most recognisable website, but it’s citing sources which claim the Japanese manufacturer is interested in scooping up its new WB Streaming and Studios business, which is being spun-off from the rest of Warner Bros Discovery, with a completion expected in mid-2026.

According to the website, Sony is interested in acquiring HBO Max and the firm’s gaming assets, which will all fall under the umbrella of this new company. The electronics maker has been gradually reinventing itself as an entertainment giant over the past few years.

While it all seems largely unlikely to us, this story lands alongside a more reliable report from Variety, which claims Warner Bros Games is dividing its intellectual property up under the stewardship of two leaders: Yves Lachance will oversee Harry Potter and Game of Thrones games while Shaun Himmerick will front Mortal Kombat and DC games.

To us, this management restructuring suggests Warner Bros Games wants to double down on its pillars, with the likes of Harry Potter and Mortal Kombat always strong performers for the organisation. We know a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is in development, as well as a new title from NetherRealm Studios.

But it’s been a period of intense turbulence for the publisher: it cancelled Wonder Woman and subsequently shut down developer Monolith Productions earlier this year, while last year’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a colossal flop from developer Rocksteady Studios.
