Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice launched as a timed PS4 console exclusive, where it really resonated with the PlayStation fanbase.

The game, developed by Heavenly Sword maker Ninja Theory, really appealed to an audience raised on narrative experiences like Uncharted and The Last of Us – and it was a big success, both critically and commercially.

But when Microsoft bought up the developer and positioned Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 as a tentpole Xbox Series X|S exclusive, it also abandoned support for the original PS4 game.

That means, while Senua’s first escapade is upgraded to take advantage of Xbox’s new-gen console, it hasn’t experienced any improvements on the PS5.

That will change on 12th August, as the UK-based developer is finally giving the original some love.

An updated version of Senua’s Sacrifice, “optimised for the PS5”, will launch alongside its sequel on 12th August. This will be a free upgrade for existing owners, or you’ll be able to purchase both titles together for $69.99.

Ninja Theory’s Will Potter explained on the Xbox Wire:

“This edition also includes the Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Original Soundtrack, so we think it’s a great value package for those of you who are new to the franchise on PlayStation. For those of you who already own the PlayStation 4 release of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, you can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.”

According to an old Digital Foundry analysis, the new-gen version of Senua’s Sacrifice includes myriad improvements, like ramped up resolutions, ray tracing, improved shadows, and much more.

You can learn a lot more about that in the video embedded below:

Obviously, as a free upgrade for all existing owners, this is a really nice bonus – even if you have no real plans to buy the sequel at all.

But are you willing to revisit Senua’s Sacrifice on PS5, or is this too little too late for a title that should have been updated eons ago? Listen to the voices in the comments section below.
