There’s a lot to breakdown about the confirmation that Where Winds Meet will be a PS5 console exclusive for at least six months, announced at the end of a new trailer for the game.

Firstly, it follows the news that Sony’s own Helldivers 2 will be launching on Xbox Series X|S next month.

Is there really any point in the platform holder paying for timed exclusives when its releasing its own software elsewhere?

Secondly, it’s a reminder of how weird the “secret console exclusivity” accusations aimed at Black Myth: Wukong are. Here we see a title being heavily promoted by the platform holder, with clear and obvious communication about which systems it’ll be available on, and the time frames involved.

Why would it do this for Where Winds Meet but keep any exclusivity around Game Science’s action adventure a mystery?

There’s currently no PS5 release date attached to the title, but it’s already available on PC and mobile in China.

The game’s set during the Ten Kingdoms era of Chinese history, and focuses on two rival dynasties.

It’s heavily inspired by Wuxia-style cinema, where traditional martial artists are depicted with superhuman abilities. Hong Kong choreographer Stephen Tung was actually brought on board by the development team to help with the combat.
