This action adventure is from the makers of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and A Way Out, and sees you and a partner take on the role of an estranged couple. Turned into dolls by their daughter’s tears, you and a friend must go on a wildly imaginative, endlessly varied, adventure to return to normal. Constantly presenting you with new puzzles and ideas, each as good as the last, you’ll never grow weary of this brilliant game, playable locally or online.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II (PS5)

The first Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a demanding historical RPG that slowly became a cult classic over the course of years — and this sequel sticks rather rigidly to its predecessor’s blueprint. Having said that, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 improves on just about everything; it’s a bigger, much more dynamic open world adventure, stuffed with captivating side quests and fantastic characters. It’s also a deeply immersive experience, forcing players to survive and eventually thrive within a punishing recreation of 15th century Europe. If you can gel with it, Deliverance 2 is easily one of the most engrossing role-playing experiences that you’ll find on PS5.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (PS5)

The force is strong with this one. While there have been several instalments in the past, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the culmination of TT Games’ previous efforts. Encompassing all nine mainline movies, this is a huge platformer adventure featuring all the most iconic sequences you remember from the big screen. When you’re not progressing the story, it turns into a sandbox, letting you explore myriad locations from the films and play as one of hundreds of characters. Its gameplay is also more modern than the older LEGO Star Wars titles, sharpening up shooting and making combat more exciting. There’s so much to see and do here that Star Wars fans need not play anything else for a while.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns (PS5)

Someone at developer Firaxis fell in love with Fire Emblem: Three Houses, because Marvel’s Midnight Suns adapts a very similar gameplay style to Disney’s iconic superhero universe. The twist here is that instead of befriending tropey anime schoolchildren, you’re shooting the breeze with Peter Parker and Tony Stark between missions. The gameplay revolves around a deck-based system where you use cards to perform actions, and while it’s an overall unusual concoction, it all comes together to create one of the more engaging strategy games on PS5 by some distance.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PS4)

It took an entire generation to actually happen, but Mass Effect Legendary Edition finally gives us what we’ve always wanted: a remastered collection of the original Mass Effect trilogy. Commander Shepard’s sci-fi escapades still hold up, with a cast of excellent characters carrying a three whole games’ worth of memorable missions. Legendary Edition does a great job of bringing some much needed polish to the first Mass Effect, while also adding a welcome sheen to its sequels. An absolute must for anyone who’s looking to become absorbed in a spacefaring adventure.
Mortal Kombat 1 (PS5)

Mortal Kombat 1 revamps the storyline of this enduring fighting game series, with all the characters you know and love reimagined in a new timeline. This makes for a brilliant (and violent) romp, turning unlikely pairs into firm allies in a high quality story mode. Once you’re done with that, the game has plenty more to do: experiment with the new Kameo system; play the board game-like Invasion mode; and get a bit more lore on all the fighters in the arcade-like Tower mode. While the core fighting hasn’t evolved all that much, this is still arguably the best Mortal Kombat yet, and will certainly be supported for a long time.
OlliOlli World (PS5)

OlliOlli World is the third entry in Roll7’s side-scrolling skateboarding series, and it takes things in a brilliant new direction. The gameplay is about the same, tasking you with pulling off tricks with the left stick as you speed through each level. However, the addictive, score-chasing core that keeps you hooked is wrapped in new layers that make it far more appealing. A cel-shaded look is complemented by a chilled out soundtrack and an eclectic range of characters, making for far more pleasant presentation. Full customisation gives you much more control of your skater’s look, and asynchronous multiplayer gives you a practically limitless supply of stages to master. A compulsive and fun-loving take on the extreme sport.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4)

A modern masterpiece and Rockstar’s best ever game, Red Dead Redemption 2 raises the bar for open world design. As if that wasn’t enough, it also has one of the best told stories in gaming, stuffed with memorable characters, moments, and missions. Mature, bold, and gripping from start to finish, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game that every PS4 owner should play.
South Park: The Stick of Truth (PS4)

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the direct sequel to Fallen Order, and it’s a bigger and better game in every way. It builds upon the previous title’s successes — engaging lightsaber combat, semi-linear environment design — while improving on areas that needed attention. The story takes some major steps forward, protagonist Cal’s character is developed meaningfully, and his supporting cast is far more interesting overall. Throw on top a hub area that gradually changes over time, oodles of optional content, and one or two awesome set pieces, and you have a truly great game, whether you’re into Star Wars or not.
