Probably one of the most moreish games on the market, Vampire Survivors is a fascinatingly fun roguelite. With attacks firing off automatically, all you have to do is avoid enemies and survive each 30-minute round, gathering XP and leveling up your abilities as you go. While it doesn’t look like much in static screens, it’ll surprise you just how chaotic things can get, and building your character to become a literally unstoppable force is satisfying every time. The sheer amount of unlocks and secrets to discover means practically every run gets you something, too. We can’t recommend this one enough, but be warned — you might never play anything else again.

flower (PS4)

flower is a beautiful and unique game about flowing through colourful fields, collecting petals and swooshing through the grass. This zen-like experience has some fairly loose goals to meet, but it’s all about exploring each level carefree, immersing yourself in the picturesque visuals and lovely music. Few games can match this one on sheer peaceful vibes.

A Short Hike (PS4)

A whimsical, miniature open world awaits in A Short Hike. From a top-down perspective, you explore an island with lots of interesting places to visit and adorable characters, each of whom has a task for you. This laid back experience is a true joy as you gain new abilities, collect things, and discover new areas.

The pulsating soundtrack, the acid trip visuals, the unapologetic gore — Hotline Miami is a game that’s been copied but never truly replicated. A modern classic, this top-down mobster murder-’em-up is brutal in more ways than one. It’s a thrill ride from the word go, and a must-play for anyone who considers themselves an adrenaline junkie.

Fez (PS4)

Fez has been around longer than the PS4, but Phil Fish’s puzzle platformer has stood the test of time. It remains a brilliantly unique game, with its dimension-flipping core mechanic leading to some astonishing twists and turns. As you run and jump through the (seemingly) 2D world, the game unfolds a grander mystery that’s a joy to discover. It’s a poster child for indie games for a reason.

PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate (PS4)

PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate is an outstanding compilation of two PSN classics, which serves as a reminder of why these fluid-focused shooters were originally so much fun. Even better, the included titles complement each other so remarkably well that you’ll struggle to see the seams, making this the very best version of an already impressive effort.

Resogun (PS4)

Housemarque is a studio known for its arcade games, and Resogun remains one of its best. Like a modern day Defender, you’re tasked with blasting away screens full of baddies while rescuing the last of humanity. It’s a gorgeous shoot-’em-up with responsive gameplay, endless replayability, and supremely satisfying visuals. If you like a good old fashioned score-chaser, get Resogun played.

The Unfinished Swan (PS4)

The Unfinished Swan is a beautiful game in which you bring colour and meaning to a seemingly endless white void. By splashing paint all around each environment, you slowly uncover the landscapes and the narrative that ties everything together. It might be short, but the amount of imaginative design packed into this tight adventure makes it a wonderful curiosity.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition (PS4)

Developer Drinkbox Studios struck gold with Guacamelee, a side-scrolling Metroidvania with a comical Mexican wrapper. The Super Turbo Championship Edition is that same great game along with all its DLC bundled in and some extra content for good measure. Playing as Juan, you explore a vibrant, interconnected world that slowly opens up as you earn new abilities. These luchador powers double up as combat and traversal mechanics, with the game leaning into fights and exploration equally. It’s great fun solo, but you can also play with up to three friends in co-op, which adds to the colourful chaos.

Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition (PS4)

At first glance it’s easy to pin down Hollow Knight as just another 2D metroidvania that boasts a steep challenge, but it’s much more than that. There’s a fantastic sense of wonder to Hollow Knight — everything that you see and do in this meticulously crafted title is brilliantly contextualised, resulting in an adventure that oozes charm, character, and memorable moments.

Kill Knight (PS5)

Kill Knight is a brutal twin-stick arcade game that plays like DOOM’s sugar-crazed nephew. You descend through the various stages of hell, fending off seemingly impossible numbers of enemies with a pair of guns, a sword, and a dash. It’s blisteringly fast and rewards skilful yet aggressive play, gradually opening up new abilities, equipment, and higher difficulties. This is a blistering, relentless force of a game to really test your skills.

Bastion is the debut game from Supergiant, and it’s a super strong opener. This action RPG stands out thanks to its wonderful art direction, memorable narrator, and layered gameplay. Child of Light (PS4)

Gone Home manages to pull off one heck of a switcheroo. Initially framed as a sort of horror experience, the hauntingly empty house you navigate slowly reveals a sad, touching narrative. It can be beaten in less than an hour, but soak in the details and the ending will hit you hard. An excellent example of less is more, Gone Home is an understated adventure you shouldn’t ignore.

If you’re after a unique puzzle game, stop reading about Gorogoa and play it. This intelligent and wonderfully crafted puzzler has you viewing and manipulating framed images in a variety of brilliantly clever ways. It’s the definition of short but sweet, providing you with a couple of hours of novel, engrossing headscratchers that’ll have you smiling at their genius and simplicity.
