Chrono Trigger Remake Hopes Return as Legendary Dev Wants to ‘Do Something’ with the Classic RPG

Hot off the heels of a supposed Chrono Trigger remake being leaked, and then subsequently being debunked in the space of just a few hours, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii has offered a flicker of hope to those who want to see the classic RPG return.

Speaking to Gamereactor Spain, Horii was asked about Chrono Trigger’s 30th anniversary celebrations, and naturally, the conversation turned to a potential remake, with the industry veteran apparently pushing the topic himself.

“Yes, I want to do something,” he admits.

He continues: “I get a lot of requests for the remake of Chrono Trigger, and so I’m starting to contemplate on it.”

Whether anything will actually come of this, only time will tell — but Horii’s influence is not to be underestimated, given his experience and positioning within Square Enix. Given his efforts in reviving the early Dragon Quest games via Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and the upcoming Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, we reckon there’s scope for similar projects.

leave it be its 30+ years old and still does not need a remake it holds up just fine today doesnt need a 3d remake and I hope thats not the direction they are going in

Never played the original so I’d be happy with a remake, HD 2D or 3D.

But it’s all down to square enix, the game has sold 5 million copies since 1995 with multiple releases across different platforms, is that good enough for square enix to make a proper remake? I don’t think it is.

I’d happily take an HD 2D remake, but if they do that, I would hope they port the original to consoles just in case it doesn’t meet expectations.

“Something” could also be a 8bit demake, or an live action Netflix series (please never consider doing this)

An upgrade to the game would be nice, just as long as it does not go the FF7 route and start making changes to the story (That should not be touched or edited for any reason). Also, because of how clean the SNES original looks, I think a HD-2D version would look horrid. However I would not be opposed to them adding to the story, putting in extras.

Literally you could just release the SNES rom on modern storefronts and that would be good enough for me. I would honestly even take the iPhone/Steam version. Literally just make the game available.
