Could Borderlands 4 Be an $80 PS5 Game? It ‘Might’ Be

Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country will both be published by 2K on PS5 later this year, but the chances of them sharing the $50 price point set for the latter are slim. Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford admitted over the weekend that he doesn’t actually know how much Borderlands 4 will cost yet, but follow-up comments suggest it’ll be a full-price launch.
Given the size and scope of the fourth entry in the looter-shooter series, this is expected. Pre-orders for the PS5 game will open “soon”, according to Pitchford, and he mentions the fourth game has “more than twice” the budget allocated to Borderlands 3 for its development.
Pitchford explained that Gearbox wants everyone to feel like they got a “good deal” when buying Borderlands 4, but then follows up: “We’re going to have a price set soon. It might be the new price that Nintendo and Microsoft have led with. It might be that we stay back. It’s going to be the people at the publishing house that decide that. We’ll know soon. I think it’s going to be fine, whatever the [price is]. It’s worth it.”
2K was the first publisher to announce a $70 price point in the lead up to the PS5 generation in 2020, and now Nintendo has made the jump to $80 with the Switch 2 launch title Mario Kart World. Come the end of 2025, Microsoft will also be charging $80 for some of its first-party PS5 ports.
