It’s official: Dynasty Warriors: Origins has been a hit for Koei Tecmo, surpassing 1 million sales in the space of a month, or thereabouts.

The Dynasty Warriors series has never been a commercial juggernaut. Back in the days of the PS2 and PS3, the games used to sell especially well in Japan — but the property rarely caught on in the west beyond its dedicated fanbase.

Origins, then, is a genuine success story. Koei Tecmo and developer Omega Force went back to the drawing board for this one, having learned harsh lessons from the dismal Dynasty Warriors 9 in 2018. The latest instalment was met with strong reviews and praise from both existing fans and newcomers.
