Gears of War: Reloaded will not get its grand PS5 console debut in Japan, as the remaster has been axed on Sony’s console in its home country.

News comes courtesy of an Xbox Wire post, citing “regional rating restrictions” and “platform policies”.

While the game will still release on Xbox Series X|S and PC in Japan, IGN speculates that the issue is likely be connected to the series’ iconic chainsaw kills, as they may fall under the category of “mutilation” by ratings board CERO. Other titles like The Callisto Protocol have hit similar snags.

While Microsoft has obtained alternative classification from the IARC (or International Age Rating Coalition) on Xbox and PC, Sony mandates that all games released on the PS Store in Japan must have a CERO rating. Therefore, the publisher has no real alternative other than to cancel the PS5 release.
