Instagram May Soon Enable You to Add Custom Colors to Notes

You may soon have a new way to customize your Notes on Instagram, with IG’s team experimenting with color and emoji options that you can dress up your Notes with.

Instagram Custom Notes

As you can see in this explainer, shared by app researcher @varma.adwaith, Instagram is currently testing out an optional process that would enable you to select a color and emoji for your Notes in the app.

As explained by Instagram:

“Now you can customize your note by adding color and an emoji. Anyone can choose to use your note style as their own and your name won’t appear next to it.”

So, theoretically at least, this would provide another means to make your Notes in the app stand out, by customizing them with a different background color and emoji, that could better signify your Notes.

Instagram has tried out emojis on Notes for selected activations in the past, including, most recently, for March Madness.

It’s also added colored notes for certain themed celebrations, so functionally, this isn’t new. But it could add another way to enhance the Notes experience.

If it actually gets released, that is.

Instagram tells me that this is only an internal prototype at this stage, and it has no plans to test it with users as yet.

So maybe it’ll never see the light of day, or maybe, Instagram will continue to look at new ways to utilize Notes, as a means to drive more engagement and interaction in the app.

Notes have proven popular with younger users, who Instagram really wants to reach, and more engagement now happens in DMs than in the main app. Sure, it has also removed Notes from Reels and feed posts, but overall, Notes seem like a positive element for personal engagement.

As such, it makes sense for IG to experiment on this front, though again, this is not scheduled for public release as yet.

We’ll keep you updated on any progress.
