Kojima U-Turns on Death Stranding 2 Review Scores, ‘Happy’ with Them

Hideo Kojima tried his absolute best to make a more divisive game after it turned out Death Stranding 2 was “too good”, but his efforts weren’t enough: the PS5 game is critically acclaimed with a flat 90 on Metacritic.
The overwhelming praise appears to be something he’s now proud of, though, as Kojima has revealed he’s “happy” with the critical scores on the London stop of the game’s world tour. In front of fans, Geoff Keighley interviewed Kojima and asked the creator how he feels now the game is out.
“I’m happy with the scores, thank you,” he said, before turning to the audience to ask if they’re playing the game. You can catch a clip below from Twitter user kjngamer:
Hideo Kojima was also joined on stage throughout the night by Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Caroline Polacheck, and CHVRCHES, with musical performances from the two acts.
In the leadup to the launch, it was revealed on a few occasions how Kojima was looking to create a more divisive game than one that would garner universal praise, and actively made changes in response to positive feedback. Soundtrack contributor Woodkid shared how Kojima told him that “the results [of testing] are too good. They like it too much. That means something is wrong; we have to change something.”
Before that, Kojima stated how he’s not interested in making a game “that appeals to everyone”, and would rather create something controversial instead. “I don’t want to simply recreate something that’s already in the world. I want to make something new,” he said.
It appears the shine and praise of a Metacritic rating of 90 has won him over, however.
