Oblivion Remastered: Everything We Know Ahead of Its Rumoured Release This Week
Looking for everything we know about Oblivion Remastered? Well, you’ve come to the right place. In this guide, we’re going to compile everything we’ve learned about the game so far, based on the many leaks that have taken place over the last few months.
Oblivion Remastered: Everything We Know

Below, we’ve compiled the most common questions regarding The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered — and then we’ve attempted to answer them based on what we know.
At this point, we must stress that Oblivion Remastered has not been officially announced. However, the game has been leaking all over the place for months, and so by gathering these leaks together, we can reach certain conclusions and make educated guesses as to what Oblivion Remastered is all about.
What is Oblivion Remastered?
Apart from being one of the worst kept secrets in modern gaming, Oblivion Remastered is a remade version of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion — an open world RPG that first launched all the way back in 2006 for the Xbox 360 and PC. It then came to PS3 in 2007.
The original Oblivion was largely responsible for pushing its developer, Bethesda, into the mainstream spotlight. Oblivion’s achievements would be overshadowed years later by its ridiculously popular sequel, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but at the time, Oblivion set the bar for open world role-playing, and is still considered a landmark release.
What’s the Oblivion Remastered release date?
Based on leaks, it’s widely believed that Oblivion Remastered will release at some point this week — that’s the week beginning the 21st April, 2025.
It’s worth mentioning that most games release on either Tuesdays or Fridays.
The reason the remaster hasn’t been announced is because it was intended to be a ‘shadow drop’ — a sudden release that catches everyone by surprise. It’s obviously a bit late for that now, though!
What platforms will Oblivion Remastered release on?
Again, based on leaked marketing materials, Oblivion Remastered is expected to release on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
It’s also worth mentioning that Oblivion Remastered will drop straight onto Xbox Game Pass if said leaks are to be believed.
How much will Oblivion Remastered cost?
Unfortunately, the leaks haven’t given us a price point for Oblivion Remastered.
We would assume that it’ll cost around the usual $69.99 / £59.99 — but there’s a chance that it may actually be a cheaper release at around $49.99 / £39.99.
It really all depends on whether Xbox Game Studios and Bethesda see this project as a AAA release, or whether it’s viewed as a lower-budget remaster.
When will Oblivion Remastered be officially revealed?
Again, Oblivion Remastered is supposed to be a shadow drop — so it’ll likely be officially revealed as soon as it’s made available to purchase. Or at the very least, it’ll all happen on the same day this week.
Who’s the Oblivion Remastered developer?
By all accounts, Oblivion Remastered has been developed by a third-party company called Virtuos.
Virtuos is made up of numerous studios across the world, and over the years, it’s worked on countless titles.
Generally speaking, Virtuos is what we call a ‘support’ studio — an outside workforce that helps make big-budget games in conjunction with their primary developers.
However, Virtuos also has numerous remasters and remakes under its belt, as well as expansions, DLCs, and updates. For example, it’s behind the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 Delta remake, and just recently, it crafted a hefty update for Cyberpunk 2077.
In summary, Virtuos was seemingly contracted by Xbox Game Studios and Bethesda to recreate Oblivion.
Is Oblivion Remastered a remake, or a remaster?
This is where things get a little complicated. Officially, this game is titled The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, and so you’d naturally just assume that it’s a remaster.
However, based on the leaks, it’s abundantly clear that this is actually much more of what we’d typically call a remake. It’s obviously been rebuilt in a new engine, with new graphics — it’s certainly not just the old Oblivion but with a resolution boost.
Will Oblivion Remastered have improved gameplay?
Previous leaks have suggested that Oblivion Remastered isn’t just a graphical overhaul — it’s expected to feature some gameplay tweaks as well. However, we don’t yet know how deep these adjustments go.
One specific leak said that combat in particular has been given an overhaul, with new stealth, archery, and block mechanics giving the action a more modern feel. Animations have apparently been redone as well, which would impact combat and general gameplay quite dramatically.
It’s worth remembering that the original Oblivion is almost 20 years old, and parts of the game haven’t aged well from a gameplay perspective. Combat can be chaotic and clunky by today’s standards, and character progression systems have long divided opinion.
For Oblivion to resonate with a new audience, we do think it needs a gameplay rework — so fingers crossed that’s what we’re getting.
Will Oblivion Remastered include all DLC?
We don’t know for sure, but you would bet on Oblivion Remastered including all of the original game’s DLC. If the DLC was to be sold all over again, there would surely be a huge backlash.
In particular, Oblivion featured two fantastic expansions. The Shivering Isles added an entirely new open world map to the game and introduced a thoroughly memorable storyline; by many, it’s still thought of as one of the best RPG expansions ever made.
Meanwhile, Knights of the Nine largely took place within the existing open world of Cyrodiil, but it still brought a whole new questline to the experience.
Will there be a physical edition of Oblivion Remastered?
According to leaked marketing materials, yes, there will be a boxed copy of Oblivion Remastered.
However, we’ve only seen this in the form of a ‘Deluxe Edition’, and so it’s unclear whether there’ll be a standard physical version as well.
On that note, the Deluxe Edition seems to include a DLC bundle that boasts unique equipment and horse armour (if you know, you know) — but it’s possible that these leaked images are out of date, or are simply placeholders.
Naturally, we’ll have confirmation on all of this stuff once Oblivion Remastered is officially unveiled.
Will Oblivion Remastered have the same voice acting?
If you’re not already familiar with Oblivion, this question might not seem very important — but trust us when we say the original game’s voice acting is a huge part of Oblivion’s overall identity.
Infamously, the title had a very small number of core voice actors who were tasked with voicing hundreds of NPCs. It’s rough in places, but there’s an endearing campiness to much of the voicework. It’s also one of the main reasons why Oblivion has lived on through innumerable internet memes.
But will that voice acting be cut for the remake? There have been no leaks on this front, so we’re left thinking that it might actually be unchanged. After all, rerecording Oblivion would take a lot of time and effort for the sake of very little gain (depending on who you ask).
Oblivion’s voice acting is iconic (for all the right and wrong reasons) and so replacing it could spark a bit of a backlash from nostalgia-driven players.
What game engine does Oblivion Remastered use?
Leaks say that Oblivion Remastered does not use Bethesda’s own Creation Engine, which is itself an evolution of the old Gamebryo Engine that the original Oblivion used.
Instead, Oblivion Remastered is thought to be using Unreal Engine 5. At the time of writing, it’s unclear what this change of engine will actually mean; we don’t know if this a complete, one-to-one remake that’s actually built upon the original Oblivion’s code, or whether it’s a ground-up reimagining.
One thing’s for sure, though: it’s going to look pretty.
