Bungie has revealed Marathon, a release which carries massive significance for both owner Sony and the Bellevue-based studio itself.

The game, which will not be free-to-play but also won’t cost $70, will come with six character classes and three maps. It seems like a pretty puny offering at launch, but with a Battle Pass and seasonal content updates, the game’s been designed to evolve over time.

As an extraction shooter, the release will be going head-to-head with genre staples like Escape from Tarkov. It’s perhaps worth pointing out that the Battlestate developed title is only available on PC, while Marathon will have the advantage of targeting console players too.

For Sony and its live service ambitions, it’s not going to have a better shot at dominating the market than with a new multiformat release from Bungie. While Helldivers 2 has been an unexpected hit for the platform holder, it clearly has grand ambitions in the space, and it’ll be counting on its new acquisition to deliver.

There’s no doubting Marathon has a striking, distinctive look which helps it to stand out from the crowd. The former Halo developer is also notorious for its fantastic gameplay feel, and so we’ve no doubt this will be a fantastic first-person shooter at its core.
