The Last of Us Part 2’s Chronological Update Out Now on PS5, PC, Lets You Play Through the Story in Linear Order

Update []: Patch 2.1.0 for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is now available to download on PS5 and PC (although it’s version number 1.5 on the latter).
As reported in the original story below, the update brings a new ‘Chronological’ mode to the title, along with a handful of performance improvements and bug fixes.
Original Story: Well this is a surprise. Naughty Dog has announced a brand new update for The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, which lets you play through the whole game in chronological order.
The suitably named Chronological Experience reshuffles Ellie and Abby’s adventure so that events play out across a linear timeline. If you’ve already played the game, you’ll know that the storytelling jumps between different times — a direction that some have criticised for being difficult to follow at points.
“We always wondered what it would be like to experience this story chronologically. And now finally, we can answer that question,” writes Naughty Dog’s editorial content manager Jonathan Dornbush on the PlayStation Blog.
He continues:
“Through the new Chronological mode, we believe players will gain even deeper insight into Part II’s narrative. Players will be able to see how Ellie being gifted a guitar flows so neatly into her learning to play, for example, while the journey through Seattle will showcase the fascinating parallels between Ellie and Abby’s crisscrossing journeys. You’ll see just how close they come into running into each other, how their actions impact each other, and more.”
This update was apparently made possible via a collaboration between the developer and Nixxes — the company behind most of Sony’s first-party PC ports.
The Chronological Experience is out today (the 8th July) for both PS5 and PC. We’ll update this article when it becomes available to download.
What’s more, the patch brings two new character skins to the title; you’ll be able to dress Joel and Tommy up as Uncharted’s Nathan and Sam Drake, respectively, in the No Return mode.
For the record, the blog post also mentions that “a host of additional bug fixes and performance improvements” will be implemented in this same patch.
