Maybe that\u2019s why people are confused. Please don&#8217;t ask me more questions about this \u2013 if I wind up reporting more information at any point in the future it\u2019ll be in an article, not on a forum. We certainly can\u2019t think of another existing PlayStation property that would warrant the attention of an all-star director like Barlog to continue.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks, Jason \u2013 now we have <em>even<\/em> more questions.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>Update #1 [<time class=\"dated \" datetime=\"2025-07-14T16:15:00+00:00\" data-format=\"D jS M Y, g:ia\">Mon 14th Jul 2025, 5:15pm<\/time>]:<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/uk\">Bloomberg<\/a> scribe Jason Schreier has thrown a further spanner in the works by asking: \u201cWhy does everybody think [Cory] Barlog\u2019s game is a new IP?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The implication here is that it\u2019s <em>not<\/em> a new IP, although it\u2019s unclear whether Jason is just having a bit of fun, knowing whatever he says will reverberate around the web, including on websites like ours.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that a handful of Santa Monica Studio staffers have referred to the fact they\u2019re working on a new IP in their resumes, while Barlog himself has not been shy about wanting to try something new.<\/p>\n<p>However, there\u2019s always the possibility the dev could be working on a licensed franchise, or revisiting something from PlayStation\u2019s past. Or it\u2019s just making more God of War\u2026<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>Original Story:<\/strong> Cory Barlog, the veteran Santa Monica Studio director behind all-time PlayStation classics like God of War 2 and 2018\u2019s God of War reboot, is toiling away on the studio\u2019s \u201cnext big thing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve known for some time that the developer has been plotting a fresh intellectual property, as Barlog stepped away from directorial duties on God of War Ragnarok, passing the baton to Eric Williams.<\/p>\n<p>But in a brief update from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/uk\">Bloomberg<\/a> journalist Jason Schreier, writing on the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.resetera.com\/threads\/playstation-studios-ot46-back-to-the-beach.1172010\/post-142651128\">ResetEra<\/a> forums, progress is going well on Santa Monica Studio\u2019s new game.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote in response to a fan query:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cCory Barlog\u2019s game is Sony Santa Monica\u2019s next big thing. Last time I spoke to anyone about it (a month or two ago) it was going well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We\u2019d assume this project has become the focus of the studio\u2019s attention since it shipped God of War Ragnarok in 2022, so it\u2019s possible this will be officially revealed soon \u2013 assuming development is, as Shreier alludes, going well.<\/p>\n<p>As for what it entails, that\u2019s anyone\u2019s guess. Barlog has alluded to the idea of a sci-fi game in the past, but it\u2019s unclear whether that\u2019s what he\u2019s working on.<\/p>\n<p>Between the likes of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Saros, Marvel\u2019s Wolverine, and whatever this turns out to be, it\u2019s looking like there\u2019s a unique and exciting end to the PS5 generation ahead.<\/p>\n<p>What would you like to see from Santa Monica Studio next? We&#8217;re rapidly moving to one first party game a year; and that strategy unfortunately feels a lot like disengagement (and I guess the direct result of so many cancellations). And yes, we&#8217;ve just had 2nd party release of DS2, and GoY is a still few months away but gaining good momentum&#8230; but if I&#8217;m honest, I just selfishly want to know what Cory&#8217;s been cooking (it&#8217;s been 7 years since his last game).
