A win for consumers?<\/p>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s worth noting that Nintendo is now walking this path alone.<\/p>\n<p>While there was strong speculation that Sony would follow suit, both Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei cost $70 \u2013 although the Japanese giant is clearly finding success upselling consumers on Digital Deluxe Editions et al.<\/p>\n<p>Even Take-Two, who\u2019s been at the centre of this storm, has resisted. Borderlands 4, amid much handwringing, will cost $70 \u2013 and Mafia: The Old Country has settled on a cheaper $50 price point that reflects its scope. The racer finished third in the latest Circana sales report, and this number excludes Switch 2 bundles and digital downloads.<\/p>\n<p>But Nintendo is a law unto itself: its brands have such prestige attached to them that it can practically charge whatever it wants.<\/p>\n<p>Our hope is that other publishers are beginning to realise they can\u2019t command the same kind of premium, and this subtle nudge towards $80 dies out before it even gets started.<\/p>\n<p>But how do you feel about the price of games right now? Too many games releasing. Not too mention the ever rising costs of development. Studios are having a hard time brraking even (let alone make profit) unless you\u2019re a massively popular (oftentimes lacking innovation) IP like FIFA or CoD.<\/p>\n<p>So studios\/publishers come up with all sorts of ways to continue to be viable in this market. Like raising game prices, live service models, agrssive microtransactions or consolidating the market by buying publishers. But most people (often rightfully so) bemoan or reject these options.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile studios are closing left and right and people are being layed off at an unprecedented scale. Now i see a lot of people here seeing it from the pov of the consumer (again, rightly so). But i wonder if anyone has an answer for this problem if they honestly take a comprehensive look at the industry?
