Marvel Rivals is the latest game to attract negativity, as its player count has suffered a substantial drop over the last few months.<\/p>\n<p>But as always, context is vitally important. After releasing in December of last year, the Overwatch-style, live service shooter went on to rack up some seriously impressive numbers. Well, kind of.<\/p>\n<p>Since it peaked at the aforementioned 644,269 players on Steam, the title&#8217;s been declining month on month (except for April, when it saw a slight increase over March).<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re now in July, and Marvel Rivals has dipped all the way down to a frankly pathetic&#8230; 163,232 players. Hold on, that&#8217;s still <em>a lot<\/em> of players.<\/p>\n<p>But again, this is where we&#8217;re at. Even at its current player count, Marvel Rivals is hovering amongst the most popular games on Steam. It&#8217;s just that when compared to its initial and insane success, some immediately declare that it&#8217;s dying.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, we should <em>always<\/em> mention that Steam numbers don&#8217;t tell the whole story. Their chosen methods of driving engagement eventually become so painfully evident that it sucks all the fun out of the proceedings (of which there can sometimes be very little as their balancing can also be wildly hit or miss).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s honestly a great concept for a game. I put over 100 hours into last I saw. But holy hell did I drop off fast when the matchmaking issues became apparent to me. NetEase even has a video of them discussing it at GDQ; I first found out about it way back with Overwatch 2 when I knew something was fishy about the matchmaking. For multiplayer with indie games (ir games where the player counts are bound to be low), the games should advertise specific days and times for online play. That way, it builds excitement and interest because the online gaming takes on an \u201cevent\u201d-like feel. While it\u2019s true that we all love instant gratification from always available online gameplay, there\u2019s also something to be said about the enjoyment felt from delaying gratification. I stopped playing at season 1. Nothing interesting. Matchmaking is bad as Overwatch too.
