The comparatively low-budget RPG has taken the PS5 by storm this year, but it plays like a modern evolution of a classic Final Fantasy game.<\/p>\n<p>Considering how divisive the Square Enix series can be, it\u2019s actually pretty cool to see the studio invite Expedition 33\u2019s developers on a pilgrimage to headquarters in Tokyo. For example, its excellent Octopath Traveler series has retro-style battles, and while it\u2019s not available on PS5, so does its <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/3ds\/bravely_default\" class=\"external\">Bravely Default<\/a> franchise.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_S6883E9D5580FE\" style=\"min-width:300px; min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-2\" class=\"lazyload\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Recently, Final Fantasy 16 director Naoki Yoshida touched on the topic of Expedition 33\u2019s success, and said there\u2019s \u201cnot a clear cut answer\u201d as to whether future Final Fantasy games will feature turn-based combat or not.<\/p>\n<p>He told the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.animenewsnetwork.com\/interview\/2025-07-08\/final-fantasy-xvi-producer-on-the-series-future\/.226405\">Anime News Network<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWith this question of turn-based versus action, it tends to isolate the gameplay to just the battle system. That doesn&#8217;t take into account what kind of game the creators want to deliver to players. For example, based on a certain graphical quality we want to present to our players, or the narrative we want to deliver to our players, it relates to how we set up the game&#8217;s systems around it. This includes the battle system, game design, and gameplay feel.
