min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250,300x600\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-1\" class=\"lazyload\" data-dfp-refresh-direct=\"true\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He points out that music is basically worthless these days, but artists have an \u201cadjacent market\u201d from touring, so there\u2019s still money to be made. The same doesn\u2019t apply to games.<\/p>\n<p>While he acknowledges there <em>may<\/em> be value in subscriptions for smaller developers seeking exposure \u2013 a Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, perhaps? \u2013 he believes creators could end up \u201cwage slaves\u201d, with little incentive to bring value to the market in the hope their project could \u201cexplode\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of debates going on. Is Game Pass profitable? Is Game Pass not profitable? What does that mean? That\u2019s really not the right question to ask anyway.<\/p>\n<p>You can do all kinds of financial jiggery-pokery for any sort of corporate service to make it look profitable if you wanted to. You take enough costs out and say that\u2019s off the balance sheet and, oh look, it\u2019s profitable now. The real issue for me on things like Game Pass is, is it healthy for the developer?<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not creating value, putting it in the marketplace, hoping it explodes, and profit sharing, and overages, and all that nice stuff. It\u2019s just, \u2018You pay me X dollars an hour, I built you a game, here, go put it on your servers.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think it\u2019s really inspiring for game developers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We\u2019re sure these comments will end up <em>extremely<\/em> controversial, and there\u2019ll be a lot of handwringing over them.<\/p>\n<p>While we kinda get the point Layden is trying to make \u2013 is there still incentive for devs to overextend creatively and qualitatively when your product\u2019s sales potential is intrinsically linked to the number of subscribers who\u2019ve already paid for it? \u2013 we imagine most developers will disagree.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_C689D8E0026C7B\" style=\"min-width:300px; I think the reality is that it would definitely generate a segment of the industry that are just slop-houses for subscription services; in the same way there are content creators for Netflix that just push out tosh to fill out the &#8216;library&#8217;. That doesn&#8217;t mean all game devs will go this way; and certainly not when there&#8217;s a giant PS market to compete in. At the end of the day, I think it&#8217;s fair to say that GP doesn&#8217;t promote excellence; though it might provide some risk tolerance for developers if they know their costs are covered. I think however, the biggest impact is likely to be a dependence; if you&#8217;re not on GP on the XB ecosystem, then you will struggle to be successful (it&#8217;s not impossible, but it will be harder to convince people to buy your game). Once that runs out things will be different but the Xbox subsidiary is a part of MS which has windows as a currency basically. Had Xbox been its own thing and strictly gaming they would not have enough cash to even consider subsidized gamepass as it exists today being in third place nor acquire large publishers. The more people who rely on subscriptions means less money for devs which in return means more dev closures meaning less games for us gamers, also less games that we actually own as these games are only <strong>rented<\/strong>.
