iconic PS3 and PS Vita kart racer Sonic &amp; All-Stars Racing Transformed. You\u2019ll also do one lap per race on any of the game\u2019s CrossWorlds, but more on that later in the preview.<\/p>\n<p>While the demo we played included a huge selection of Sonic the Hedgehog characters \u2013 including deep pulls like Zazz and Espio \u2013 we settled on, well, <em>Hatsune Miku<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile insert-extended lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_F68AFFC282623C\" style=\"min-width:300px; min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250,300x600\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-2\" class=\"lazyload\" data-dfp-refresh-direct=\"true\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Look, we love the cast of Sonic characters, but personally we\u2019re more interested in the wider world of SEGA, and we sincerely hope the likes of Ryo Hazuki and Samba De Amigo will be joining the currently confirmed guest stars, like Persona 5\u2019s Joker and Yakuza: Like a Dragon\u2019s Ichiban Kasuga.<\/p>\n<p>There are a ton of different vehicles to choose from but, pushed for time, we settled on a standard car, in order to get the best feeling for the handling. Gadgets are effectively perks which can be combined into loadouts \u2013 so you can focus on your combat prowess, drifting capabilities, or perhaps even a combination of the two.<\/p>\n<p>The demo we played had a couple of presets already setup, so we settled for one of those, but we can see how the full game will allow you to get quite creative with your build \u2013 assuming it\u2019s all properly balanced.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_C68AFFC2826268\" style=\"min-width:300px; min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-3\" class=\"lazyload\" data-dfp-refresh-direct=\"true\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The loadout we selected focused on rings, generating one every few seconds and giving us bonuses for performing tricks and drifts. There was also a loadout we noticed which increased your top speed in the final lap, allowing you to pull off daring comebacks. It\u2019s going to be interesting to see the community get creative with these options, and gradually determine what works.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of a Grand Prix you\u2019ll also need to select a Rival, who\u2019ll be your main competitor throughout the series. The longer you drift around a corner the better you\u2019ll boost out of it, with the sense of speed decent on the default difficulty setting.<\/p>\n<p>Weapons include things like boxing gloves and boosts, but don\u2019t really reference items from Sonic the Hedgehog or the wider SEGA world, which we personally think is a shame.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_Z68AFFC282628B\" style=\"min-width:300px; min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-4\" class=\"lazyload\" data-dfp-refresh-direct=\"true\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The big twist with CrossWorlds, as its name implies, is that at the end of the first lap, the race leader will have the option to trigger a Travel Ring, temporarily changing the entire location of the course.<\/p>\n<p>So, for example, we started out on Metal Harbor, the aircraft carrier stage from Sonic Adventure 2. (Not to be confused with After Burner\u2019s Carrier Zone from Sonic &amp; All-Stars Racing Transformed, but they do basically look the same.) However, as we hit the second lap, we were whisked away to Kraken Bay, an original pirate-inspired location, with nautical scenery and a giant sea monster on the horizon.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Preview: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Already Feels Like a Respectable Rival to Mario Kart World 4\" href=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/29dcb257efd25\/preview-sonic-racing-crossworlds-already-feels-like-a-respectable-rival-to-mario-kart-world-4.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/29dcb257efd25\/preview-sonic-racing-crossworlds-already-feels-like-a-respectable-rival-to-mario-kart-world-4.450x.jpg 450w, https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/29dcb257efd25\/preview-sonic-racing-crossworlds-already-feels-like-a-respectable-rival-to-mario-kart-world-4.900x.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 799px) 450px, (min-width: 800px)\" src=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/29dcb257efd25\/preview-sonic-racing-crossworlds-already-feels-like-a-respectable-rival-to-mario-kart-world-4.900x.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Preview: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Already Feels Like a Respectable Rival to Mario Kart World 4\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>These transitions are technically impressive \u2013 remember Ratchet &amp; Clank: Rift Apart? \u2013 and they keep you on your toes, because you\u2019re effectively forced to deal with a new set of challenges. The third lap then takes you back to the stage you started on, but the state will have completely changed, so you might find yourself flying now instead of driving \u2013 or whatever the course demands.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re interested to see how all this factors when playing online, as games like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/mario_kart_8_deluxe\" class=\"external\">Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/a> can get a bit bland once the best players have learned all of the optimal routes. At least this way you don\u2019t necessarily know from the beginning what your second lap will entail.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_E68AFFC28262AC\" style=\"min-width:300px; min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-5\" class=\"lazyload\" data-dfp-refresh-direct=\"true\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>We ended up winning the Grand Prix, but by the skin of our teeth. Big the Cat beat us in at least one of races, so don\u2019t expect this to be a walk in the park.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, we\u2019re pretty impressed by what we\u2019ve seen so far, though. The gameplay feels tight, the courses look sensational on the PS5 Pro, and the character roster continues to grow. We know there are concerns about some characters lacking speech samples, but we\u2019re loving the sheer wealth of content on offer. Pac-Man and Minecraft courses? I don&#8217;t like the recent entries as much because they basically removed all the racing elements and turned them into a party game first, a roaming game now. For instance, play Double Dash and then play 8 or World and compare the handling, physics, circuits and gameplay. I love Sonic racing games as they feel more like proper racing games. I remember enjoying Sonic &amp; All Stars Racing Transformed more than Mario Kart 7 and 8. Team Sonic Racing is also very good. Reading here that A is the gas gas me bummed, the Speedstorm controls jyst feel so right, R gas, L brake\/drift, then jump and item face buttons. And it looks really good on the PS5. Rift Apart&#8217;s use of it was basic, Crossworlds is basic, it&#8217;s not exciting at all.<\/p>\n<p>Mario Kart is overrated, to me the amount of characters is pathetic, Crash, Sonic (even if I prefer the non Sonic only ones) but wider array, even Mario Kart has dipped into doing that and outside of Mario characters, and even then Double Dash with it&#8217;s dynamic or DS with it&#8217;s mission mode are far more interesting. Track wise sure the locations or kart customisation (didn&#8217;t like in 7 anyway and even the track selection in 7 was ok, I haven&#8217;t played 8 on Wii U as I have access to it but don&#8217;t care to, World is just Fuel on PS3 with a menu or and segmented stuff (or I guess is a open world Mario Kart comparable to others), but World has grinding mechanics and a few other tasks but otherwise looks pretty boring) but mechanically they are pretty boring.<\/p>\n<p>Sonic racing games like Crash ones consistently have a campaign with event variety, that to me Transformed doing that made even other arcade\/sim racers look like garbage with weak event variety in them compared to the few on PS3 I actually like from that era and PS4\/5 era suck due to graphics\/physics focus and the downgrades we get gameplay wise, so if Sonic Crosworlds has a good campaign\/event variety it like Onrush are better games for that alone on the market then the downgraded filth of racing games these days (or Indies like Inertial Drift that do and complement themselves well in style\/mechanics), have good physics and driving models. Like Mario 2D platformers I don&#8217;t find Mario kart that great feeling, it&#8217;s overrated and just seems like a lot of nostalgia or &#8216;that game we only think of playing&#8217; when to me it&#8217;s the most bland kart racer series out there. Weapon use, sure in chaotic ways but physics, mechanics, power ups, lack of good career for boring cups and things, lol no.<\/p>\n<p>I hate 2D Mario it feels like it&#8217;s always slippery to me, it&#8217;s why I prefer other 2D platformers. To me each Mario Kart besides track variety feels like the New Super 2D games. Minor tweaks and really don&#8217;t add a lot of characters or change much up. At least that&#8217;s the impression i get sometimes when I see them. Wii onwards just seemed weird to me of minor additions and people will just praise them. The track parts are &#8216;there&#8217; but really don&#8217;t do much and to me like Transformed the parts were kind of a gimmick and not got much depth to them.<\/p>\n<p>Even Crossworlds with rifts seems rather basic. I mean you had tracks with different segmented area insides, it&#8217;s nothing that fancy really here, even Little Big Planet Karting has changed moments per 3 lap on 1 track not sure if it did many others. Other games can do that easily.<\/p>\n<p>Even Rift Apart looked pathetic to me, Blizar yes it does the multiple states things even 2009 Crack in Time did or Yotei may do with the young\/old or whatever, like a Link to the Past light world\/dark world or so.<\/p>\n<p>But even still Crossworlds looks fun as it&#8217;s a Sonic Kart racer, but mechanic wise doesn&#8217;t impress me at all. But at least I know the singleplayer will be solid. Hopefully&#8230;. if Team Sonic Racing didn&#8217;t set (or Crossworlds) don&#8217;t set themselves up to be weaker?
