to be tight to its consumers, it just tripped over a cable or three.<\/p>\n<p>You may recall all the way back in July, we reported that old purchased PS3 avatars had suddenly been removed from consumers\u2019 accounts. Well, now they\u2019re back \u2013 <em>many<\/em> of them, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>We can corroborate that we\u2019re once again able to access avatars for the likes of Kung-Fu Rider and other last-last-gen crap. We paid actual legal tender for some of these, so we\u2019re happy to see them rightfully resurrected. (Ghost of Tsushima\u2019s anniversary is a recent example of that.)<\/p>\n<p>However, we spotted <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.resetera.com\/threads\/paid-for-and-redeemed-avatars-from-the-ps3-era-seemingly-removed-from-psn-see-threadmark.1249377\/#post-142939992\">a few isolated examples<\/a> of fans complaining that their old PS3 avatars have gone missing, so we decided to take a look for ourselves. And it\u2019s true!<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile insert-extended lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_B68BCB001E4CBF\" style=\"min-width:300px; min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250,300x600\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-2\" class=\"lazyload\" data-dfp-refresh-direct=\"true\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>We bought a handful of avatars on the PS3 back in the day, including one for Kung-Fu Rider (remember that?!) and PAIN. We can\u2019t find any of these in the Premium Avatars category on our PS5.<\/p>\n<p>We still have plenty of avatars to choose from, and we weren\u2019t planning to swap out our Demon Slayer one anyway, but it\u2019s interesting to see these ancient profile pictures nixed.<\/p>\n<p>It seems if you\u2019re still using a purchased PS3 avatar, then it\u2019ll work. But don\u2019t change it to anything else, because there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll lose access to it later.<\/p>\n<p>Our guess is that this likely isn\u2019t malicious, and it\u2019s probably just a symptom of the PS3\u2019s increasingly creaky architecture. Either way, we\u2019re not going to complain too heavily about the loss of a JPG we bought over 15 years ago for pennies.<\/p>\n<p>We have seen some people say they\u2019re still seeing their purchased PS3 avatars, so your mileage may vary. You can&#8217;t see PS3 avatars on a PS4\/5 and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>Having to manually download them on PS3 is a pain (beyond requiring a console) due to the stupid download list, though if you buy more than one at a time you can download them all at once immediately after completing the purchase. When I got my PS4 I gave my PS3 to my brother. A little while later I switched to a Witcher avatar I got for free on PS4 but decided shortly after I wanted to switch to my more unique PS3 one. I wasn&#8217;t able to find it on my PS4 and had to get my brother to log in as me back on the PS3 to find the purchase and switch it back.
