Meta\u2019s systems can also correlate birthday well-wishes from other users to factor into its assessment. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>It\u2019s not a perfect system, and Meta has acknowledged that the process will still make some errors (users will have the option to appeal and\/or correct their age if they are incorrectly limited). But Meta says that its system is improving, and learning more about the key considerations that are likely to indicate user age via platform usage.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>Meta will also now default Canadian teens under the age of 16 into its advanced security mode, which can only be deactivated by a parent, as it has for U.S. teens since last September.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>This is an important focus for the app, as more and more regions look to implement new restrictions on social media usage to protect young users.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>Over the last year, several European nations, have put their support behind proposed laws to cut off young teens from social media apps entirely, including <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/tech\/news\/eu-sidesteps-macrons-ultimatum-to-ban-social-media-for-kids-under-15\/\" style=\"box-sizing:inherit; color:#0563c1; cursor:pointer\">France<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/news\/2025-06-europe-curb-children-social-media.html\" style=\"box-sizing:inherit; color:#0563c1; cursor:pointer\">Greece<\/a>\u00a0and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/news\/2025-06-europe-curb-children-social-media.html\" style=\"box-sizing:inherit; color:#0563c1; cursor:pointer\">Denmark<\/a>. Spain is considering <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/spain-internet-children-safety-cc1f39e403b8b333979794f5e79be23d\" style=\"box-sizing:inherit; color:#0563c1; cursor:pointer\">a 16 year-old access restriction<\/a>, while Australia\u00a0and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/may\/06\/new-zealand-pm-luxon-social-media-ban-children\" style=\"box-sizing:inherit; color:#0563c1; cursor:pointer\">New Zealand<\/a>\u00a0are also moving to implement their own laws, and Norway is in the process of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/oct\/23\/norway-to-increase-minimum-age-limit-on-social-media-to-15-to-protect-children\" style=\"box-sizing:inherit; color:#0563c1; cursor:pointer\">developing its own regulations<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>It seems inevitable that some level of restriction is going to be imposed on teen social media use in many regions, but the challenge then is how do you enforce it, and how do you ensure that you can legally hold platforms to account for upholding their requirements?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>Because each platform has its own system for detecting and protecting teens, and some, like these new measures from IG, are more advanced than others. But in a legal sense, enforcement requires standards, and safety benchmarks that can be met by all such approaches.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>At present, there\u2019s no universal standard on age detection, and while AI is showing some promise, various other methods are being tested, including selfie verification by third party providers (which poses its own exposure risk).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>In Australia, for example, which is moving ahead with its own laws on teen social media access, regulators recently <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/aug\/31\/age-assurance-technology-trial-report-australia-under-16-social-media-ban-some-errors-inevitable\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">tested <span><span><span>60 different age verification approaches<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span>, from a range of vendors, and found that while some options are mostly effective, there will be mistakes, especially for users within two years of 16.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Thus far, the Australian government hasn\u2019t outlined the specific requirements for social platforms in regards to age checking, with the proposed laws only noting that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-15\/social-media-ban-final-rules-announced\/105776730\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">\u201call <span><span>reasonable steps&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span> are undertaken to remove the accounts of those aged under 16.
