confusion around hashtags in the app, with re-posts from Instagram that include a lot of tags now hiding them behind a \u201cShow hashtags\u201d CTA on posts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Threads hashtags\" data-imagemodel=\"186864\" src=\"https:\/\/imgproxy.divecdn.com\/qqmBH29rpe-BfaUTvCr5kq_R9_RmZjqzoqT_xWQGBY0\/g:ce\/rs:fit:1600:0\/Z3M6Ly9kaXZlc2l0ZS1zdG9yYWdlL2RpdmVpbWFnZS90aHJlYWRzX2hhc2h0YWdzX1BYSHh1bHYucG5n.webp\"\/><\/div>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>As you can see in this example, shared by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@chris\/post\/DPNzrzfDiSS\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">Chris Messina<\/a> (from a post by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@tonybamber?hl=en\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">Tony Bamber<\/a>), now, when a user is cross-posting from IG, and they include a heap of hashtags (as is the Instagram way), Threads is hiding them from view, seemingly as a means to discourage hashtag use.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Or maybe just clutter in-stream, but either way, Threads remains opposed to hashtags, as it has been from the start, with the Threads team keen to avoid the rampant spamming of popular tags in order to get more post reach.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Which, according to Meta, doesn\u2019t work like it used to either way.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has repeatedly disparaged the use of hashtags in this respect, saying, basically, that they\u2019re not really needed at all anymore, and definitely won\u2019t help to boost your post reach in any significant way. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>On record, here\u2019s an overview of Mosseri\u2019s various remarks on hashtags on Threads, as well as announcements on its alternatives to evolve topic tagging:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In July 2023, shortly after the launch of the app, Mosseri <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@mosseri\/post\/CubvGY0t3Rk?xmt=AQF09XbjxqVzYhRCMxc7mpL72j3ujBNuxFnWbwzkZ7bsJg\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">said<\/a> that hashtags \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span>come along with a lot of safety and integrity work that I think a lot of people underappreciate<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>,\u201d which is why he wasn\u2019t sure that Threads should have them<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In August 2023, Mosseri said that <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span>he was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@mosseri\/post\/Cv56152Jv4L?xmt=AQF09XbjxqVzYhRCMxc7mpL72j3ujBNuxFnWbwzkZ7bsJg\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">still unsure about adding hashtags on Threads<\/a> as they could \u201ccause more trouble than they\u2019re worth\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In October 2023, Mosseri said that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@mosseri\/post\/Cy6PtMBPI-I?hl=en\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">hashtags will not \u201cmeaningfully change the trajectory\u201d<\/a> of Threads\u2019 development<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Then in late October, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@mosseri\/post\/C0j585AvsJq?xmt=AQF0iImfWsAOKb0W98jrRgolGID6vt7FsefmteQfNldbMIA\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">Threads rolled out topic tags<\/a>, which enable users to add one topic to each update, in order to \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span>make it easier for others to find and join in on the conversation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Threads topic tags\" data-imagemodel=\"148364\" src=\"https:\/\/imgproxy.divecdn.com\/SjGhzI4WGuTfv6cpJ9iMzo2j2dWQTFwgXaUqDlo4sRg\/g:ce\/rs:fit:1600:0\/Z3M6Ly9kaXZlc2l0ZS1zdG9yYWdlL2RpdmVpbWFnZS90aHJlYWRzX3RhZ3MyLnBuZw==.webp\"\/><\/div>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>So, to be clear, Mosseri (who, it\u2019s also worth noting, is no longer in charge of Threads) doesn\u2019t see much potential for hashtags, at least with respect to how a lot of people have used them in the past in increasing post reach. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>But Threads is still trying to work out a better alternative, with its latest Communities feature being another experiment in helping to guide topic-based discussion in the app.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div at the same time, Threads is also dealing with legacy approaches to social media, with people still adding hashtags even though they\u2019re not clickable in the app (or cross-posting from IG, as in this latest example). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Technically, any keyword in a post on Threads is searchable, whether it includes the # marker or not, which should mean that searching for any term should produce the same results, with or without the hashtag symbol.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>But it doesn\u2019t.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>For example, if you search for \u201cbasketball\u201d on Threads, or \u201c#basketball,\u201d then sort by \u201cRecent,\u201d the results are significantly different:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img these should produce the same results, based on straight keyword-matching. But they don\u2019t, which means that, really, it depends on how people are searching for your topic of focus as to whether you should be adding hashtags or not.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Because even if they aren\u2019t clickable, if the search results displayed for each are different, then the specifics may matter for linking into relevant queries.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>And we don\u2019t have any insight into how people are searching on Threads, because Threads doesn\u2019t share data on keywords and\/or search trends.
