<em>is<\/em> happening.<\/p>\n<p>Those of you who followed the drama around Microsoft\u2019s unprecedented near-$70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard will recall Khan was one of the few voices against the buyout.<\/p>\n<p>She argued, at the time, that consolidation would lead to price increases and layoffs. A lengthy court case followed, which concluded with the FTC losing and the acquisition going ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Khan became an increasingly divisive figure during the process, with some vocal fans urging her to step aside and allow the transaction to take place.<\/p>\n<div class=\"for-mobile insert insert-label\">\n<div id=\"inject-primis-player\" in the aftermath of 50% price hikes to subscription service <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.purexbox.com\"><strong>Game Pass<\/strong><\/a>, Khan is having the last laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Writing on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/linamkhan\/status\/1974192096841265511\">X<\/a> (or <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/linamkhan\/status\/1974192096841265511\">Twitter<\/a>) she said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMicrosoft\u2019s acquisition of Activision has been followed by significant price hikes and layoffs, harming both gamers and developers.<\/p>\n<p>As we\u2019ve seen across sectors, increasing market consolidation and increasing prices often go hand-in-hand.<\/p>\n<p>As dominant firms become too-big-to-care, they can make things worse for their customers without having to worry about the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the aftermath of the acquisition, Microsoft has laid off thousands of employees across Xbox and its pursuit for profitability has seen it significantly ramp up the price of Game Pass and water down its services.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-10-03\/xbox-s-game-pass-hike-shows-cost-of-lost-call-of-duty-sales\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported that putting Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in the subscription \u2013 one of the reasons many fans wanted the acquisition to go ahead in the first place \u2013 cost the company over $300 million, with a whopping 82% of the shooter\u2019s full-price sales coming from PlayStation during its launch month in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully this sorry scenario will remain fresh in the mind of gamers the next She and the rest of the FTC spent most of their time arguing about how unfair the ABK deal was to PlayStation (it wasn&#8217;t), not consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Like many of the commenters on Push Square, Khan largely based her argument around how terrible it would be for Microsoft to make ABK games exclusive to Xbox (even though Xbox has a fraction of the exclusives that PlayStation does) and how Xbox would become a monopoly in the console market, rather than how damaging the price increases, layoffs, etc. would be to Xbox consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out people&#8217;s biggest fear from the ABK deal didn&#8217;t even happen. They also cut 900 positions across geurilla, firesprite, naughty dog and insomniac during 2024. Sony have closed studios, laid off staff and of course have raised prices too, Nintendo raised game prices, EA sold out, Ubisoft have cancelled games and laid off staff, Square Enix sold off half their studio&#8217;s\/IP&#8217;s, WB shut studios and cancelled games etc etc<\/p>\n<p>Its somewhat scraping to the barrel to conclude that this level of rationalising and price hiking was &#8216;inevitable&#8217; &#8211; after all some would be inevitable at some point as you don&#8217;t need 3 Publishing departments each with its own management structure or 3 payroll departments and inflation would lead to eventual price increases.<\/p>\n<p>This is someone trying to claim Victory after embarrassingly defeated and made to look stupid Globally. This new pricing structure pretty effectively deemphasizes Day 1 releases, and the upcharge in Ultimate should help make the practice more sustainable. Which, if I remember all those articles correctly about how unsustainable Day 1 is, should be thought of as a good thing. From the developers&#8217; perspectives, at least. I&#8217;m not even going to get into how the equally priced GamePass Premium tier basically offers feature parity with PlayStation Plus Premium.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, to focus on this article: no s***.
