And as long time fighting game players, we\u2019re still not sure even we\u2019ve fully wrapped our head around it all.<\/p>\n<div class=\"for-mobile insert insert-label\">\n<div id=\"inject-primis-player\" data-src-primis=\"https:\/\/live.primis.tech\/live\/liveView.php?s=117168&amp;vp_content=plembed39b4tigwxqjz&amp;cbuster=%%CACHEBUSTER%%&amp;playerApiId=primis_player_float&amp;schain=1.0,1!ziffdavis.com,22392450815,1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This preview is based on our hands-on at the <strong>Tokyo Game Show<\/strong>, but we\u2019re also pulling in knowledge and experience from its recent Closed Beta Test as well.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture\" data-uuid=\"d8b97b5dea888\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 2\" href=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/d8b97b5dea888\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-2.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/d8b97b5dea888\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-2.900x.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 2\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>That it\u2019s taking us <em>so<\/em> long to process all of the mechanics speaks to the challenge the Japanese developer has. But it\u2019s also worth noting that we\u2019re not playing the final experience here, and we still don\u2019t know exactly <em>how<\/em> the studio hopes to onboard players.<\/p>\n<p>On the busy TGS show floor, we asked Senior Producer Reed Baird exactly this question, as he proceeded to pummel us as Ghost Rider, a new playable addition to the title\u2019s newest demo.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that there are various concessions which make Marvel Tokon much more accessible than other tag-team fighting games, like Marvel vs Capcom for example.<\/p>\n<p>The way the Assemble mechanic works, for instance \u2013 you start with just one fighter and then gradually add more to your roster \u2013 means you can focus on mastering one character and using the others as supports. You don\u2019t <em>need<\/em> to swap, as your squad has a shared life bar.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile insert-extended lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_B68E48B299478B\" style=\"min-width:300px; min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250,300x600\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-2\" class=\"lazyload\" data-dfp-refresh-direct=\"true\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"picture\" data-uuid=\"cf790c0cf6186\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 7\" href=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/cf790c0cf6186\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-7.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/cf790c0cf6186\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-7.900x.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 7\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>This is a fair point and an issue we\u2019ve often had with tag-team fighting games; it\u2019s a big ask to \u201cgit gud\u201d with <em>one<\/em> character, so it\u2019d be borderline demoralising to force you to master <em>four<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the aforementioned pro players will be toggling between their teammates ferociously, but we suppose that\u2019s a prime example of where both casual and hardcore players have been considered.<\/p>\n<p>Baird also pointed to the control scheme, which has auto-combos and one-button skills.<\/p>\n<p>You can still perform moves using traditional Street Fighter-style inputs (with a damage boost to boot), but more casual players can get by with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/nintendo-switch\/super_smash_bros_ultimate\" class=\"external\">Super Smash Bros<\/a>-style commands and button mashing.<\/p>\n<p>The problem, we\u2019ve found, is that there\u2019s just <em>so<\/em> much to process.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, you <em>can<\/em> just tap buttons and watch awesome things unfold on screen, but you need to have an idea of what you\u2019re doing and why. Between copious different gauges and techniques, it\u2019s a <em>lot<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture\" data-uuid=\"7521185114e58\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 3\" href=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/7521185114e58\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-3.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/7521185114e58\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-3.900x.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 3\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>This is perhaps exemplified by the Closed Beta Test\u2019s tutorial, which is beautifully presented but runs a good 15 to 20 minutes. By the time we\u2019d completed it, we\u2019d forgotten a lot of the earlier things we\u2019d learned.<\/p>\n<p>You also do need to consider that each superhero handles differently. We focused on Ghost Rider and Spider-Man at TGS, because they were playable at the show for the very first time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_G68E48B29947CD\" style=\"min-width:300px; min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-3\" class=\"lazyload\" data-dfp-refresh-direct=\"true\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Each character has different mechanics, so Ghost Rider for example has an additional gauge at the bottom of the screen which \u201cwarms up\u201d as he attacks.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s designed to encourage you to get in close to your opponent, but there\u2019s a risk\/reward element to this which means he can overheat. Naturally, this leaves him vulnerable, but if you can keep him in the \u201csweet spot\u201d then you\u2019ll get a buff to your attacks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture\" data-uuid=\"eca29d81c947d\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 4\" href=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/eca29d81c947d\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-4.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/eca29d81c947d\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-4.900x.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 4\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Spider-Man is less complicated but he also benefits from unique gameplay. For example, he has a Spider-Sense ability which acts as a kind of reversal \u2013 and he also has the ability to cover distance quickly using his webs.<\/p>\n<p>Baird explained to us that picking characters for the game is not <em>just<\/em> about who\u2019s popularity: it\u2019s also about unique silhouettes and gameplay mechanics. It sounds like the developer is trying to avoid as much overlap as possible, and wants each character to feel completely unique.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_H68E48B29947EE\" style=\"min-width:300px; min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-4\" class=\"lazyload\" data-dfp-refresh-direct=\"true\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>We asked him <em>why<\/em> more characters hadn\u2019t been revealed yet, and he told us there\u2019s a plan for the game. He pointed out that the eight already announced is a large selection, and the launch day roster has been determined internally.<\/p>\n<p>Our concern is that, in a 4vs4 fighting format, a small roster could result in a <em>lot<\/em> of repetition.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture\" data-uuid=\"d33bf4e3dd6b2\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 5\" href=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/d33bf4e3dd6b2\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-5.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/d33bf4e3dd6b2\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-5.900x.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 5\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>For example, if you imagine a traditional eight stage arcade ladder, with one final boss, that\u2019d mean you\u2019d fight seven different squads. But if the final game only has, say, 16 characters, you\u2019d only be able to assemble four truly unique squads.<\/p>\n<p>Baird naturally wouldn\u2019t comment on the scale of the final roster, or how many stages there\u2019ll be in the final game.<\/p>\n<p>We played a lot on the new level Savage Land, a prehistoric pan-Marvel landscape that\u2019s largely featured in the X-Men. It\u2019s a really cool multi-layered stage with dinosaurs lurking in the background and volcanoes among the landscape. Marvel\u2019s New York City is the other option announced so far.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insert-label centered insert lazyload for-mobile lazyload\">\n<div id=\"PS_MPU_X_M68E48B2994817\" style=\"min-width:300px; min-height:250px\" data-dfp-id=\"pushsquare\/mobile_web_display\/article\" data-dfp-sizes=\"300x250\" data-dfp-targeting=\"pos=1,gto=false,experiment=nl-article-mobile-5\" class=\"lazyload\" data-dfp-refresh-direct=\"true\" data-prebid-config=\"Lazy_Load_HP_MPU\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The cool thing about Marvel Tokon is stage transitions are a big part of its gameplay \u2013 it\u2019s one of the primary ways to assemble your team \u2013 and so they feel much denser than in the likes of, say, Street Fighter 6 where they primarily consist of a single screen.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture\" data-uuid=\"4d9e71c1c58b1\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 6\" href=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/4d9e71c1c58b1\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-6.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/4d9e71c1c58b1\/preview-marvel-tokons-biggest-battle-isnt-in-the-arena-6.900x.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Preview: Marvel Tokon's Biggest Battle Isn't in the Arena 6\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>We still remain <em>incredibly<\/em> optimistic about the game overall, then \u2013 we just need to spend a <em>lot<\/em> more time with it to wrap our head around it. We really can\u2019t wait to play more. But how\u2019s your hype holding up for this game? Virtua Fighter for example, it only has 3 buttons; punch, kick, and block which is quite easy to play for casuals. But it still offers a lot of gameplay depth since one character at least has 100 to 200 moves with multiple stance, tight input window for advance combo etc.<\/p>\n<p>And actually, these days there&#8217;s a good chunk of casuals who stick with the game they enjoyed and some of them even became pro players.<\/p>\n<p>@AdamNovice Yeah his comments always negatives for PS games.
