target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/tbpn\/status\/1983231937306354078\">TBPN<\/a>, as transcribed by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/stephentotilo\/status\/1983255817785597980\">Game File<\/a>, CEO Satya Nadella spoke for several minutes about his company\u2019s gaming business without once saying the word \u2018Xbox\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that, following the firm\u2019s near-$70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, it\u2019s become the biggest publisher in the world. And now its goal is to bring its software to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe want to be a fantastic publisher, similar to the approach of what we did with Office. We\u2019re going to be everywhere, on every platform. However, he didn\u2019t get into specifics.<\/p>\n<p>The executive then concluded that the \u201cbest way to innovate is to have good margins\u201d, perhaps corroborating recent reports about the intense profit goals which have been attributed to the Xbox division.<\/p>\n<p>He concluded:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cGaming&#8217;s competition is not other gaming. Gaming&#8217;s competition is short-form video. And so, if we as an industry don&#8217;t continue to innovate both how we produce, what we produce, how we think about distribution, the economic model-best way to innovate is to have good margins.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This reflects comments made by Xbox first-party executive Matt Booty recently, when he said the company is not competing with PlayStation, but social media platforms like TikTok instead.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, there\u2019s a lot to dig into here, but it\u2019s nothing particularly new.<\/p>\n<p>We think it\u2019s pretty clear at this point that Microsoft is completely done with exclusives, and we should expect practically all of its games on PS5 from this point onwards.<\/p>\n<p>As for its new hardware, we have questions about how it\u2019s going to effectively combine PC and console without completely undermining its own business model. And then you have to ponder how much all of this is going to cost.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not convinced Xbox is going to win the war against TikTok with a $1,000-plus device, but it\u2019s clear from Nadella\u2019s comments that the company will no longer bankroll the division\u2019s whims.<\/p>\n<p>And so it\u2019s going to be fascinating to see how Microsoft positions its next-gen device against Sony is on PC. Sure they have timed exclusives. But at the moment a Steam deck or ROG or a gaming PC can legally play PS titles. Same can\u2019t be said for Mario Kart world. The top 10 played games on PS and Xbox aren\u2019t exclusive tho. Wii-U didn\u2019t sell hardware with their exclusive games until they ported them to switch. I am not saying i like or dislike exclusive games, but the notion that they are the money maker or why 10\u2019s of millions of gamers buy a platform is false. The top 10 played and sold games on PS and Xbox tell all. In fact if i wanted to skip PS6 and i don\u2019t and i won\u2019t i could cause the next Xbox will be a PC with Steam and i could play Sony games much like the PC does now. So i am not sure how this is some talking point still. MS and Steam is the only platform that plays all games.
