At one point, its similarities to Twitter seemed to establish it as the next-best thing, which seemed to be setting it up as the best alternative. But since then, Threads has used its connection to Instagram to catapault itself to 400 million monthly active users, while X has remained steady, based on its reported user figures.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Which has relegated Bluesky to also-ran status, though it has established a dedicated, passionate audience of intelligent contributors, who totally won\u2019t come after me in the comments for daring to criticize their favorite app.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Though I will note that Bluesky\u2019s growth has slowed considerably from its initial peaks. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>Bluesky had been sitting on around 5 million users till August last year, before seeing an influx of interest, as users turned away from X.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Between September and November last year, Bluesky added an additional 15 million users, rising to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/digital\/bluesky-20-million-users-twitter-exodus-elon-musk-1236065566\/\" style=\"box-sizing:inherit; color:#0563c1; cursor:pointer\">20 million users<\/a>\u00a0by the end of that month. Which was a major boost in growth momentum, and the sudden interest certainly piqued the interest of investors and the broader tech community.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>But since then, Bluesky\u2019s growth has largely returned to the mean.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>It added another 10 million users between November 2024 and March 2025, taking it to 30 million total users. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>And now, it\u2019s reached 40 million, after another 7 months.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>So Bluesky went from adding <\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span>around 5 million new users per month at peak<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, to adding approximately 1.4 million per month now. And while any growth is a positive, especially when we\u2019re talking millions of people, it\u2019s a notable shift in popularity, which is unlikely to be enough to sustain the app long-term, especially if it looks to hold out on advertising intake. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>But for now at least, Bluesky is still working to build out the platform, and it\u2019s added a range of new features in recent months, including <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/bsky.app\/post\/3lxxo3i4qzs2c\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">improved image and video sharing<\/a>, updated <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.social\/about\/blog\/10-31-2025-building-healthier-social-media-update\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">\u201csocial proximity\u201d ranking<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.social\/about\/blog\/10-31-2025-building-healthier-social-media-update\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">dislike posts<\/a>, and more. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>It also recently <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/bsky.app\/post\/3m476tnt5ps2v\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">launched a new logo<\/a> to reflect its evolving platform.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bluesky logo\" data-imagemodel=\"188822\" src=\"https:\/\/imgproxy.divecdn.com\/QVwu39Z4wXOOAaxpoUWJ9BjS2x3HSpsVwm7VDasa8jw\/g:ce\/rs:fit:1600:0\/Z3M6Ly9kaXZlc2l0ZS1zdG9yYWdlL2RpdmVpbWFnZS9ibHVla3N5X2xvZ28ucG5n.webp\"\/><\/div>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Bluesky also says that relative engagement in the app, across various community discussions, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/harry.bsky.team\/post\/3m3pvyj3xmc2v\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">is rising<\/a>, while it also reached <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/bsky.app\/post\/3m2kdgmbbzc2o\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">2 billion cumulative posts in October<\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Which, when you average it out, equates to around 1.4 million posts per day in the app since its launch in 2021. Which is pretty significant, and when you also consider that it took a long time for Bluesky to catch on, that\u2019s a lot of activity. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Though it also worth noting that posting activity in the app is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.jazco.dev\/stats\">steadily declining over time<\/a>:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bluesky posting activity\" data-imagemodel=\"188823\" src=\"https:\/\/imgproxy.divecdn.com\/B85ps_Dnm1ZQj4oM3mBw03-MwcDdPusClWiVn_EmqWI\/g:ce\/rs:fit:1600:0\/Z3M6Ly9kaXZlc2l0ZS1zdG9yYWdlL2RpdmVpbWFnZS9ibHVla3N5X3Bvc3RlcnMucG5n.webp\"\/><\/div>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>So should your brand be looking to build a presence on Bluesky?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Well, it depends on your target audience, and where they interact. It\u2019s definitely worth taking a look, and seeing what\u2019s happening in the app around your topics of focus, and considering what types of discussion may not only be happening on Bluesky, but stemming to other platforms from the app. The Bluesky user base is generally pretty dedicated, and focused on the topics they post about, and in this sense, they could also be influential, depending on the subject. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In terms of widest possible reach, no, Bluesky\u2019s not it, but it has established its value for some groups and users, which could be of relevance. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>And while there are no ads on Bluesky as yet, I\u2019m tipping there will be sometime soon.
