Or at least, they <em>should<\/em> be.<\/p>\n<p>This is expected in video games \u2014 especially <em>modern<\/em> video games. Big budget sequels in particular are usually iterative; they build on what the last game got right, and on paper, that leads to a better overall experience.<\/p>\n<p>Sony has done a lot of sequel-ing this generation. We don&#8217;t want to get dragged down into this topic of conversation too much because it can get rather muddy \u2014 but this kind of mindset may play into the point of our poll.<\/p>\n<p>So, which one do you like more? Ghost of Yotei? Or Ghost of Tsushima?<\/p>\n<p>We think it&#8217;s an interesting question, because before Yotei released, detractors would argue that it &#8220;looks like DLC&#8221;, or that it&#8217;s simply &#8220;the same game&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And such critiques did \u2014 and still do \u2014 hold some weight. Again, Yotei is a <em>very<\/em> iterative sequel. Both aesthetically and mechanically, it&#8217;s an extension of what Sucker Punch had already crafted with Tsushima.<\/p>\n<p>But it also makes sure to branch out into its own take on the Ghost formula. Most reviews praised the game&#8217;s ability to make exploration and discovery feel so organic, which was viewed as an improvement over Tsushima&#8217;s greater reliance on map markers.<\/p>\n<p>The combat system was given more depth as well, thanks to a range of swappable weapons, and a tighter balance around enemy behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>In general, we&#8217;d say that Yotei does a better job of making itself feel fresh across its whole campaign \u2014 repetition being something that Tsushima is often criticised for.<\/p>\n<p>But at the same time, because the sequel <em>is<\/em> iterative \u2014 evolution instead of revolution and all that \u2014 you may well feel as though Yotei doesn&#8217;t quite have the same impact that Tsushima did.<\/p>\n<p>When Jin&#8217;s journey dropped in 2020 for PS4, it was something completely new for Sucker Punch \u2014 and probably the vast majority of its players. Yes, it was another open world game with enemy camps to conquer and side activities in abundance, but the samurai cinema angle had never really been explored by AAA developers on that scale.<\/p>\n<p>Yotei couldn&#8217;t have that same kind of effect. Not just because the gaming landscape&#8217;s changed, but because it was only ever going to pull at the same threads of its predecessor. And so, you might lean towards still liking Tsushima more.<\/p>\n<p>And now that the dust has settled, we ask again: which Ghost game do you like best? The very first entrance scene are boundaries where as ghost of Tsushima was only bounded by the sea, which felt more realistic. The story is much for muchness but granted i haven\u2019t beat it completely yet. Tbh I\u2019m not sure why but the first game felt more open and more distinct zones with total character vs yotei which only has about 10 zones. Feels more like yotei is an add on to Tsushima, with extra graphics details. And it&#8217;s not because Yotei looks bad, but because Tsushima is unbelievably pretty for a PS4 game. And while gameplay is more refined and varied, I was quite disappointed with the new weapon system. It&#8217;s not that I expected Nioh level or something, but it&#8217;s just the same shape block puzzle for toddlers as Jin&#8217;s stances were, the only difference is animation. <br \/>And while I&#8217;m only 35 hours in and can&#8217;t speak for the whole story, I definitely prefer Jin over Atsu because of his transformation from samurai to ghost. I also feel stealth was better in Tsushima as well. Other then those two things Yotei is the better game with far better combat, better side content and a better story with Atsu actually being a great character unlike Jin who is just boring, bland and pretty dull saved by his voice actor who does a great job. That said i went with the middle option for what i like best as i much prefer Tsushima&#8217;s actual open world while preffering Yotei&#8217;s gameplay and story. To the point of frustration actually &#8211; and I think it just wasn&#8217;t as much <strong>fun<\/strong> as Tsushima and I actually dreaded fights which definitely isn&#8217;t the norm for me.<\/p>\n<p>I platted Tsushima twice (second time played through on hard) and didn&#8217;t have half the problems I did on Yotei. I could perfect parry 10+ times in a row with ease on Tsushima and it felt great but the timing just never clicked on Yotei. Plus there were some sweeping enemy attacks which despite having a blue glint seemed unstoppable. I think they got the balance here very wrong and I just couldn&#8217;t acclimatise to the combat and it left me disappointed in this aspect.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that I still thought it was a bloody great game (platted it). So so beautiful and love a revenge story. But the parry system and combat knocked it down a few points for me.<\/p>\n<p>Personally hope Sucker Punch move onto a completely new IP now. Tsushima is so good because its systems are so deeply informed by its narrative; a coming of age tale about a man forced to choose between the rigid morality of deontology and the fluidity of utilitarianism. Every hot spring rested at, poem written and person interacted with allows the player to evaluate the cost of that inevitable decision. The surreal, wild and unknown beauty of the island reflects this and stands in stark contrast to the comfort, security and safety of the status quo that Jin has benefited greatly from.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m skeptical of taking that blueprint and simply slapping a revenge fable overtop of it. That game felt like a breath of fresh air when it launched, so it&#8217;s sat much better in my memory. Yotei is fantastic, but it&#8217;s very much as described, an iteration on what made the first game great. I mean, Jin is his own main antagonist, depending on how you look at things. It\u2019s a really interesting conflict, honestly, whereas Yotei\u2019s a bit more on the nose.<\/p>\n<p>Gameplay wise, though, Yotei takes the cake. It\u2019s a lot more varied than the first game and still just as fluid.<\/p>\n<p>That said though, I still think Tsushima\u2019s also superior in world building and quest structure. Yotei is perhaps too loose with those concepts, even if the art direction\u2019s improved\u2026 and the soundtrack in Yotei is fantastic. I usually gravitate toward an original idea, I definitely liked Zero Dawn better than Forbidden West, and Jin Sakai&#8217;s journey just resonated with me more than Atsu. Ghost of Yotei was an excellent sequel, it was a ninety five out of a hundred, and I loved it. Sucker Punch did a phenomenal job, but at the end of the day?
