in Capcom&#8217;s Street Fighter Paywall, Says Fighting Games Miss Out on Tournament Money<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div class=\"body body-text article-text\">\n<section class=\"text\">\n<figure class=\"picture\" data-uuid=\"65d6b261e3215\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Tekken Street Fighter Paywall\" href=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/65d6b261e3215\/tekken-street-fighter-paywall.large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.pushsquare.com\/65d6b261e3215\/tekken-street-fighter-paywall.900x.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" alt=\"Tekken Street Fighter Paywall\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Capcom recently prompted a backlash from fighting game fans when it revealed plans to place its official Street Fighter 6 finals behind a paywall \u2014 but fresh comments from Tekken boss Katsuhiro Harada perhaps shed a little light on <em>why<\/em> the publisher&#8217;s going down that road.<\/p>\n<p>The answer is money, <em>obviously<\/em>, but in an interview with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamebusiness.com\/p\/tekkens-katsuhiro-harada-as-a-producer\">The Game Business<\/a>, Harada is quick to explain that pro tournaments simply don&#8217;t make money for the fighting games that they&#8217;re built around.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lots of big companies are coming in and putting money into advertisements for these events, and a lot of influencers are making big money off of their streams,&#8221; Well, historically, it&#8217;s all been about promotion.<\/p>\n<p>If your fighting game makes a splash at a public tournament, then it&#8217;s essentially free advertising, which, in theory, leads to sales of said game. The same is true when a community springs up around specific titles; positive word of mouth and healthy competition have always counted for so much when it comes to a fighter&#8217;s long term success.<\/p>\n<p>But again, Harada suggests that there&#8217;s no noticeable impact on a game&#8217;s revenue \u2014 even if it ends up being one of the biggest names at Evo, or any other well-known event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s quite interesting to see how that might change,&#8221; he admits, before mentioning Capcom&#8217;s latest strategy: &#8220;Occasionally, you&#8217;re seeing certain events that pop up where they&#8217;re charging pay-per-view, or something like that. Seeing how the money side of this changes, that&#8217;s something I&#8217;m quite interested in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many a Tekken fan will be seriously questioning Harada&#8217;s wording here, but we&#8217;ll just have to wait and see whether Capcom&#8217;s pay-per-view plans actually, er, <em>pay off<\/em> before jumping the gun.<\/p>\n<p>Still, this makes for an intriguing topic, especially since fighting games have experienced a dramatic boost in popularity over the last decade or so. There&#8217;s clearly a lot of money to be made in the wider world of esports, but it remains to be seen whether fighting games can tap into that same kind of appeal.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s your take on this? There&#8217;s also more content (like stages, soundtracks) that&#8217;s easy to purchase with in-game money you earn just by playing the game.<\/p>\n<p>But the biggest thing is the DLC characters keep the player-base together. If my buddy goes and buys the game tomorrow with all, none, or some of the DLC, he can hop online and play me (who&#8217;s owned it since launch) no problem. I own a chunk of the DLC.<\/p>\n<p>You know what happened back in the day? The new content was made anyways and sold as a brand new title via a &#8220;Super Turbo Whatever&#8221; edition. And it split the player-base. If this was Street Fighter 4, my base game copy is now junk because my buddy bought Super Street Fighter 4 and we can&#8217;t play together. I bought the &#8220;DLC&#8221; for Street Fighter 4 by&#8230; walking to my local store and handing over the price of a new game for Super Street Fighter 4.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll also refute your &#8220;complete&#8221; game comment &#8211; SF6 was complete at launch. Highest base roster for a new gen of SF, best in business net code, robust training tools, massive single player RPG mode. They&#8217;ve simply added to all that.<\/p>\n<p>The character unlock thing is also not what it seems &#8211; even with all the characters unlocked, the old Tekken games still only had about two-thirds of Tekken 8&#8217;s base roster. They had significantly less moves, and a lot of them were palette\/model swaps. It encourages you to explore the game\u2019s different modes, and makes you want to try out all the different characters. The problem nowadays is the online mode. If you want to start playing online right away (which most fighters accommodate) it helps to have all the characters unlocked from the get go.<\/p>\n<p>And let\u2019s be honest, most of the time unlocking characters was just going through the arcade mode over and over again. The content is a fraction of the modern equivalent.<\/p>\n<p>Booted up Tekken 3 on PS5 there recently and the base is all of 10 characters. I played games a lot more then because you could beat a game in a weekend to a week. The investment to play games now is crazy. For fighting games you could pick and master more characters in the game. Focused and well curated.
