As part of the joint venture, Chew said the company has signed agreements with the three managing investors:\u00a0<span>Oracle<\/span>, Silver Lake, and Abu Dhabi-based MGX.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>So they\u2019re not all U.S.-based, but this is the same ownership group that the Trump team approved back in September, when it trumpeted its pending TikTok deal. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Which didn\u2019t progress as expected. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>White House officials had expected to get final agreement on the deal shortly after that September press conference, but Chinese officials were less definitive on the deal, with the CCP seemingly seeking more trade or diplomatic concessions before agreeing to the proposal. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Whether any further concessions have been agreed to in order to secure this agreement, we don\u2019t know, but various outlets are reporting that the deal has been communicated to TikTok staff, even though it hasn\u2019t officially been confirmed by ByteDance or TikTok as yet. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>So what does that mean for TikTok?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Well, it gets to stay active in the U.S., where the platform has 170 million users. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>That\u2019s the main win for the app, though the bigger question that many will have now is what kind of influence the Trump administration might have over TikTok\u2019s algorithms and what content people see in the app. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>One of the key sticking points of the deal has long been TikTok\u2019s algorithm, and whether any deal would involve the sale of the algorithm code to a U.S. entity. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>According to Chew\u2019s announcement, the new TikTok U.S. entity will be responsible for \u201cre-training\u201d the algorithm on U.S. user data, \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span>to ensure the content feed is free from outside manipulation.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Which also means that this group will have the power to weigh things as they choose, and with the Trump team set to have a say over <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/09\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-saves-tiktok-while-protecting-national-security\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">who, exactly, will be on the governing board of the group<\/a>, that could see TikTok\u2019s systems lean further toward Trump-supporting content and perspectives.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>One concern here is that TikTok will eventually become more like X, where right-leaning conspiracy theories are <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/how-elon-musk-uses-his-x-social-media-platform-to-amplify-right-wing-views\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">allowed far more leeway<\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Indeed, X owner Elon Musk is arguably the biggest amplifier of politically-motivated misinformation, and he has repeatedly used his influence over X\u2019s algorithm to boost perspectives that he agrees with and restrict those he doesn\u2019t.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>At first blush, one might assume that TikTok is less politically influential than X, given X\u2019s focus on real-time news discussion.
