If Mario starts to show up on PlayStation, that\u2019s the apocalypse, right? Cats and dogs living together. And the same goes for Nathan Drake and Uncharted. Many of its first-party single player games now get ported to PC, but we\u2019ve even seen breakout live service success stories like Helldivers 2 launch on Xbox Series X|S.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"object object-youtube\">\n<figure class=\"youtube\" data-videoid=\"cwH_otOCDmQ\" data-start=\"0\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cwH_otOCDmQ?rel=0&amp;hd=1&amp;showinfo=0&amp;modestbranding=0&amp;autohide=1\">\n<div class=\"video-stage\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Former PlayStation Boss Shawn Layden Chats The Last of Us, Exclusives, E3 &amp; More! - Character Select\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cwH_otOCDmQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>To be fair, Layden acknowledged this strategy, arguing that online multiplayer games tend to demand a large audience in order to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>However, he added that exclusives have an additional benefit when it comes to extracting as much value from a particular piece of hardware as possible:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhen you do code across multiple platforms you do have to code to the lowest common denominator. But if you do exclusives you can push every lever to 11 in that platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What do you think? Sonys pc ports have been pretty bad in terms of optimisation and pretty much all of the games that have made their way to the ps5 from Microsoft have been disappointing to say the least apart from the sublime forza horizon 5 which is just superb. For example, if you know the amount of polygons, the tick rate of the chip, the amount of Data it can move per &#8216;cycle&#8217;, you make sure the Game you build keeps within those parameters. If you have an area that &#8216;exceeds&#8217; the Polygon count for that hardware, you just change the way the Area was designed.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you are building a game first and foremost, maybe you have some &#8216;minimum\/maximum&#8217; parameters to aim between depending on the range of Hardware you aim to release on. You never had to buy a specific brand of TV, Video\/DVD\/Bluray player, Record, CD, or Cassette player or &#8216;miss&#8217; out on Content. You bought the Hardware based on price, specs etc and how well it &#8216;competed&#8217; within that market.<\/p>\n<p>Being forced to buy some Plastic box of electronics just to play a certain game, A game that could run equally well, If not Better elsewhere but refuse to release it elsewhere, is Anti-consumer. Its taking &#8216;competition&#8217; away &#8211; you could build the &#8216;worst&#8217; hardware, have the worst &#8216;consumer&#8217; practices and reputation, but still &#8216;sell&#8217; just because its the ONLY option to play &#8216;Mario&#8217; or whatever &#8216;exclusive&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The whole point about Competition is that consumers are &#8216;free&#8217; to choose, not &#8216;forced&#8217; to buy because of &#8216;exclusive&#8217; content. If Sony &#8216;can&#8217;t&#8217; compete with MS on specs, Controller layout or whatever other areas are &#8216;Hardware&#8217; based, that&#8217;s tough &#8211; do better &#8216;next&#8217; time. How do you think PC builders &#8216;compete&#8217; without &#8216;Exclusive&#8217; content? Similar to PC but industry-wide.<\/p>\n<p>Game developers compete against other game developers, and hardware manufacturers compete against other hardware manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>If your hardware e.g. PS6 can&#8217;t sell on it&#8217;s own merits, but can only sell via exclusive access to a piece of software, then I&#8217;d suggest you get out of the hardware business and go sell burgers instead.<\/p>\n<p>All that is achieved by such arrangements is the perpetuation of mediocre hardware, that consumers would not otherwise purchase if they had freedom of choice.<\/p>\n<p>That includes peripherals. It annoys me to this day that I had to buy a PSVR\/PSVR2, which I consider some of the worse headsets on the market with garbage out-of-date last-gen fresnel lenses, in order to play RE7 and RE8 in VR. Those titles would have been commercially viable and profitable if sold on all systems, and would have delivered a vastly superior experience to the consumer on some of the better hardware out there.<\/p>\n<p>Too many times I sit here playing good games on mediocre hardware, when also sat next to me is a system\/peripheral that could do the game a lot more justice and give me a more fun experience. You pick Nintendo because you want to play Zelda l, Mario and Pok\u00e9mon, you pick Playstation for their AAA blockbusters and big third party releases, you would pick Xbox for Gears of War, Halo, Forza and Fable, You would pick PC for its open system and thousands of smaller game that don&#8217;t make it over to consoles, but it&#8217;s all just the same the choice boils down to games you want to play. So yes exclusives are detrimental to a consoles success and should definitely stay that way, the only reason Xbox players don&#8217;t see it that way any more is because the path Microsoft have chosen but trust me Xbox locking down games like Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls 6, Fallout 5, Diablo 5, Halo and Gears to their platform (also not on PC) they would have done very well and this topic would never even be discussed. But AAA when they land with a good trailer\/gameplay\/story\/etc. artstyle or world you notice.<\/p>\n<p>You can notice a particular studio&#8217;s work over time but even that aside you can notice the little touches without realising.<\/p>\n<p>You can make 100 games look the same but if they have a good angle to their characters, world, gameplay then yes it interests people. It&#8217;s control but it makes it more competitive and exciting to look into them.<\/p>\n<p>Having more access is fine but also more boring or not as exciting. The other makes it like something niche something alluring and special. The issue is, you have to pay to get acces to Netflix\u2019s exclusives. On which device the media is consumed isnt relevant to this point, they both require payment to access exclusive content. So the analogy with exclusive games still stands, because both lock exclusive content behind payment. But make no mistake, both \u2018force\u2019 you to pay if you want acces to their exclusive content.<\/p>\n<p>So saying Sony \u2018forces\u2019 and Netflix doesnt because it\u2019s accessible on many devices isnt an accurate conclusion. They just have different ways of delivery and payment models.<\/p>\n<p>The funny thing is, a lot of people have maybe 2 or 3 movie streaming services, each costing around $15 or so each month. And all those services have exclusives content that they want, but somehow that is considered normal. But having exclusive games for a platform is an issue.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding pricing, sure gaming requires an upfront cost of hardware if you want to play locally. But consider that many people have 2 or 3 movie streaming subscriptions, paying around $420 ($35monthly) a year. Thats about the cost of a console, but paid yearly, and <strong>indefinitely.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not to mention the fact that if you unsubscribe those streaming services you end up with nothing at all. So lets say you paid for those streaming services for 7 years (about 1 console generation), you paid $2940 and end up with nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, after 7 years you still own the console hardware, you own your games if you bought them physically.
