incident\u201d signs for X, because we\u2019re just 9 days into the New Year and we\u2019re already on track for another international incident sparked by Elon Musk\u2019s freewheeling approach to technological development. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>As has been widely reported, X is currently under scrutiny in several regions due to xAI\u2019s Grok chatbot producing sexualized images, of anyone, young or old, at the request of X users. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>The fact that Grok image generation is so readily available within the X composer has exacerbated the problem, however, as reported by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/grok-is-generating-sexual-content-far-more-graphic-than-whats-on-x\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">Wired<\/a>, it\u2019s actually far worse on the dedicated Grok app, where thousands of non-consensual nudes are being generated every day. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>Indeed, according to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-01-02\/grok-posts-sexual-images-of-minors-after-lapses-in-safeguards\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">research commissioned by Bloomberg<\/a>, Grok, at one stage early in the New Year, was producing over 6,700 images every hour that would be categorized as \u201csexually suggestive of nudifying.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>Elon Musk has acknowledged the issue, but has thus far <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2007475612949102943\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">put the onus back onto users<\/a>, saying that any illegal content that\u2019s produced by Grok is the responsibility of the requesting user, and that those who do so will be dealt with. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>But that\u2019s not really addressing the concern, and now, X could be facing full bans, in several markets.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>Thus far:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span>India\u2019s IT Industry has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/01\/02\/india-orders-musks-x-to-fix-grok-over-obscene-ai-content\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">issued X with an official order<\/a> to take \u201ccorrective action\u201d to address Grok\u2019s image generation concerns relating to <\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span>\u201cobscene, pornographic, vulgar, indecent, sexually explicit, pedophilic, or otherwise prohibited under law\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> material<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Malaysia\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span>Communications and Multimedia Commission has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=1424217069070152&amp;set=pcb.1424217092403483\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">issued a public statement<\/a> urging X to ensure that its AI tools align with local laws<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>Indonesia\u2019s Communications Ministry has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2628534\/world\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">threatened to ban X and Grok<\/a> if the issues with \u201cdegrading pictures of women and children\u201d are not addressed<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>French authorities have <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/01\/04\/french-and-malaysian-authorities-are-investigating-grok-for-generating-sexualized-deepfakes\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">announced an official investigation<\/a> into sexually explicit deepfakes on X <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Britain\u2019s Ofcom has <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/xDaily\/status\/2008242897142116605\" style=\"color:#0563c1\"><span><span><span><span>issued a request to X<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u00a0to outline what steps it\u2019s taking \u201cto comply with their legal duties to protect users in the U.K.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><span><span>All of these could lead to full bans of X in each region, while some have also questioned <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/x-grok-app-store-nudify-csam-apple-google-content-moderation\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">why Google and Apple are continuing to host X in their app stores<\/a>, despite banning other nudify apps.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>In the U.K. specifically, Prime Minister Kier Starmer has noted that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/get-a-grip-on-grok-starmer-tells-x-after-ai-tool-is-used-for-child-sex-images-13492111\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">\u201call options are on the table\u201d<\/a> in addressing concerns with X\u2019s latest controversy, including a full ban of the app if a solution is not provided.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>The threat of expanded action is very real, and with X refusing to provide further clarity on its actions to address such, other than passing responsibility onto users, it seems that we could be on a path to another international diplomacy crisis on the back of a social media related issue.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>Which is becoming almost a regular occurrence, with TikTok also still at the center of a foreign trade standoff between China and the U.S.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>Elon Musk\u2019s connections with the U.S. government also complicate matters here. The last time the EU Commission issued X with a penalty (over transparency violations, as well as misleading verification indicators in the app), Elon called on the U.S. government for support in opposing the fine. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>And he got it. U.S.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JDVance\/status\/1996701953372704921\" style=\"box-sizing:inherit; color:#0563c1; cursor:pointer; font-variant-ligatures:normal; text-align:start\"><span><span><span><span>Vice President J.D. Vance<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u00a0and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecRubio\/status\/1996974377003319667\" style=\"box-sizing:inherit; color:#0563c1; cursor:pointer; font-variant-ligatures:normal; text-align:start\"><span><span><span><span>Secretary of State Marco Rubio<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span> both criticized the penalty, labeling it \u201can attack on all American tech platforms and the American people by foreign governments.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>The White House didn\u2019t, however, take the next step, which would involve trade sanctions in response to such, but U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced his support for measures that address any perceived inequality in foreign markets, including fines for social media platforms. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>With that in mind, and with the U.S. looking to reassert its power on foreign policy, Elon Musk could call on the White House once again, if X actually does end up getting banned in any region, and could force the issue, leading to an expanded impacts on trade and diplomacy. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>It still seems so strange that the bird app, which made \u201ctweeting\u201d a synonym for short messages, could be central to international political stability.
