some bad news for those whose job it is to drive more traffic to a website. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Well, some bad news and some interesting news, at least.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>First, we\u2019ll go with the bad: Referral traffic continues to decline for many websites.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>As reported by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pressgazette.co.uk\/media-audience-and-business-data\/google-traffic-down-2025-trends-report-2026\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">The Press Gazette<\/a> this week (based on data from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk\/journalism-media-and-technology-trends-and-predictions-2026\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">Chartbeat\/Reuters Institute<\/a>):<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><em><span><span><span><span>\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><em><span><span><span>Google search traffic to publishers declined globally by a third in the year to November [\u2026]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><em> <\/em><em><span><span><span>Since May 2023, Google search referrals were down 21% globally, with Google Discover down 18% and all external referrals down 24%.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" not ideal, and you can see in the above chart how website traffic has declined since the implementation of Google\u2019s AI previews, which now see far more searches beginning and ending within Google itself. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Though that\u2019s not what Google says is happening. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>In August last year, in response to claims that web traffic is down across the board due to Google\u2019s AI previews, the search giant explained that:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><em><span><span><span><span>\u201cOverall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year. Additionally, average click quality has increased and we\u2019re actually sending slightly more quality clicks to websites than a year ago.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Yet, this latest data backs up various other primarily publisher-focused reports, which all indicate that referral traffic has declined by between 20% and 50% for most websites.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>There may be variances, but I\u2019m guessing that you\u2019re seeing declines in your Google referrals, and if that\u2019s the case, you might want to ensure that reports like this are made available to those setting your KPIs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>But that\u2019s not to say that you should just throw in the towel, and accept that your traffic has tanked. Maybe you just need to work out where people are looking, and how search is evolving, which could give you another avenue of focus for your SEO efforts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Or maybe look to Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) to ensure that you\u2019re meeting searchers where they\u2019re looking. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>That\u2019s where the interesting data comes in, with two new reports indicating that LinkedIn is quickly rising as a key citation source for AI chatbots.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"SEMRush AI referrals\" data-imagemodel=\"191931\" src=\"https:\/\/imgproxy.divecdn.com\/cdQ9Kd4bZ1feLwrpMfkw8QIcG0hEf4IWhMJWc-THb9I\/g:ce\/rs:fit:1600:0\/Z3M6Ly9kaXZlc2l0ZS1zdG9yYWdlL2RpdmVpbWFnZS9zZW1ydXNoX2FpX2NoYXRib3RfcmVmZXJyYWxzLnBuZw==.webp\"\/><\/div>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>As you can see in this listing, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/louisifnewman_linkedin-is-now-the-2-most-cited-source-activity-7415059784829177856-3M8I\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">compiled by SEMRush<\/a>, which is based on a study of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span>230,000 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity conducted in October 2025, LinkedIn is now only trailing Reddit in terms of overall citations in chatbot responses.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>That\u2019s also backed up by another study <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/llms-citing-linkedin-more-4x-3-months-jan-2026-michael-hermon-vmkrf\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">conducted by Spotlight<\/a>, which shows that AI tools like<\/span><\/span><span><span> ChatGPT and Perplexity are citing LinkedIn sources up to 5x times more often this year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Spotlight AI citations study\" data-imagemodel=\"191932\" src=\"https:\/\/imgproxy.divecdn.com\/dU22kS8Nh2PsVR5uUF1PrCQOiE5uWGi8gUCLPl-Gfbw\/g:ce\/rs:fit:1600:0\/Z3M6Ly9kaXZlc2l0ZS1zdG9yYWdlL2RpdmVpbWFnZS9zcG90bGlnaHRfYWlfY2l0YXRpb25zLnBuZw==.webp\"\/><\/div>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span>As per <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/llms-citing-linkedin-more-4x-3-months-jan-2026-michael-hermon-vmkrf\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1\">Spotlight\u2019s Michael Hermon<\/a>:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><em><span><span>\u201cIn the last three months, data from Spotlight\u2019s extensive database shows that ChatGPT cites LinkedIn 4.2 times more, Perplexity 5.7 times more, and the average across all LLMs is about 4 to 5 times the usual rate.
